Some new additions to the garden today!
We have families in the garden again so we’ve added some activities for them to help keep the kiddos busy if they get tired of weeding. 🤣

We really should be composting at the garden!

Have you always wanted to try composting but don’t know how? Start today on Learn About Composting Day.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

– You can compost in your own backyard using bins or in a heap, though bins are usually a better way to manage the materials. You can either buy a bin or make your own with woven wire, a wooden pallet or a barrel/drum.

– Along with yard materials, certain food scraps can also be easily composted at home. Be sure to follow recommendations on what types of food scraps can be composted at home to prevent odors and avoid attracting animals and other pests.

– When backyard composting isn’t possible, check out other options. Several communities and organizations pick up compostable food waste or have food waste or yard waste drop-off locations in Wisconsin. Make sure to ask for a full list of what they accept.

For all you parents facing the end of the school year… here is a little PSA. As a former school custodian I can tell you finding a milk carton after 9 months in a locker can be quite the experience!

If you notice wasps in the garden this might be good information.

If you notice wasps in the garden this might be good information.

Not every wasp in the garden is the same 😅 A few things I try to notice first:
🐝 Paper wasps often build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves or sheltered spots.
🌿 They can actually help in the garden by hunting caterpillars and other soft-bodied pests.
⚠️ Yellowjackets are the ones I’m more cautious around, especially if they’re nesting underground or near trash.
🥤 If wasps are showing up around drinks, food, or garbage, that’s usually more of a yellowjacket warning sign.
🏡 I leave quiet nests alone when they’re not near people, doors, pets, or play areas.
It’s always worth identifying them before spraying, because some are helpful garden hunters while others need more caution.

Something to keep in mind while doing spring yard work! Wrapping tape sticky side out around the ankles seems to work pretty good for catching ticks.
