Happy 91st Birthday to His Holiness the Dalai Lama!

Joseph Goldstein vividly remembers the visit of His Holiness in the early days of IMS: “In 1979, His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited IMS and we gave him a tour. When we got to the old bowling alley, left from the time when this was a Catholic novitiate, His Holiness demonstrated the joy and ease of heart for which he is so well known. He took a ball and sent it flying down the lane.”

Spaces are available during this year’s Two-Month Retreat! The full retreat runs from Sept. 29–Nov. 24, with Part 1: Sept. 29–Oct. 26, and Part 2: Oct. 27–Nov. 24.

An IMS tradition since the beginning (50 years this year), meditators from around the world have come to sit long retreat with us. This is a unique opportunity to devote a longer period of time to deepen practice in silence with sangha.

We’re excited to share that Joseph Goldstein will be offering in-person sessions throughout the retreat (three sessions in Part 1 and three in Part 2). Joseph taught on the Three-Month Retreat team until 2016, and we’re grateful for his return to the meditation hall during this special retreat.

*Note: this year’s retreat will be the Two-Month Retreat and will return to the typical Three-Month Retreat next year.

Through the natural unfolding of mindfulness, we learn to rest in presence and attune to the rhythms of body, heart, and mind 🌿🌀

Next month (Tuesday, July 21 - Tuesday, July 28) join Devin Berry, Rev. Shinmu Tamori Gibson, and Neesha Patel for an online hybrid retreat, Rooted in Presence: https://ims.dharma.org/courses/Rooted-in-Presence-2026

As presence deepens, we begin to recognize the ways we turn away from connection within ourselves, with one another, and with the world. This silent retreat supported by sangha offers a refuge for practice and a space to remember what truly sustains us.

The online experience will mirror the in-person retreat with talks live-streamed directly from the meditation hall.

IMS was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal. The journalist attended the five day retreat, Living the Buddha’s Teachings, with Annie Nugent and Devin Berry. Read her full experience: https://on.wsj.com/4oJ1TRN

Imagine being entirely disconnected. No phone, no laptop, no smartwatch, no ring, no pings. No TV, no reading, no journaling, no music. And no talking whatsoever—not even eye contact—as you sit, eat and stroll mindfully alongside 90 or so strangers.

For five long days.

This may sound like the setting for a “White Lotus”-style murder plot. Something best suited to self-satisfied tech bros with their own private mountaintops or people who enjoy soybeans and use hashtags like .

Some may say that sounds like hell. And yet…that was the draw.
