Barre Center For Buddhist Studies

Barre Center For Buddhist Studies Barre Center for Buddhist Studies offers residential and online courses combining study, discussion, and meditation.

Located on 90 acres of wooded land in rural, central Massachusetts, just a half mile from the Insight Meditation Society, BCBS provides a peaceful and contemplative setting for the study and investigation of the Buddha’s teachings. The secluded campus consists of a 250 year-old farmhouse, a dharma hall, and three cottages which taken together provide space for a 5,000 volume library, classroom, me

ditation hall, student housing, dining, and offices. The study center offers a variety of courses, workshops, retreats, and self-study programs to further research, study, and practice. Our programming is rooted in the classical Buddhist tradition of the earliest teachings and practices, but calls for dialogue with other schools of Buddhism and with other academic fields. All courses support both silent meditation practice and conscious investigation of the teachings.

Laughter filled the BCBS Farmhouse recently as staff and volunteers gathered to celebrate April Pellegrino Gustafson and her growing family at a baby shower hosted on campus.

The celebration included a tiny turquoise “Baby Yogi” onesie, a sweet reminder that community at BCBS extends beyond the Dharma Hall. Alongside meditation, study, and retreat practice, there is also friendship, care, generosity, and the joy of celebrating important moments in one another’s lives.

If you or someone you know in the BCBS community is expecting a baby, we would be delighted to send a complimentary BCBS onesie as a small expression of our love, joy, and support.

So glad to be able to offer my 6-week Wise Speech course again this summer on gift economy basis. "Words shape the moral atmosphere we inhabit. They can conceal harm or reveal it, deepen division or restore dignity, numb the heart or call it awake. In a time of disinformation, polarization, and fear, Wise Speech is not just a personal virtue. It’s a civic and spiritual necessity. How might curiosity help us understand and shift the patterns that shape our lives?

In this residential workshop, Judson Brewer and Robin Boudette offer training in mindful inquiry as a path to behavior change. Drawing on Buddhist psychology and modern science, this approach invites a close look at habits through direct experience, bringing awareness to the patterns that drive them and opening the possibility for change.

This weekend includes guided inquiry, small group practice, and time in silence, supporting a grounded and experiential learning process.

Following the retreat Liberation: A Dialogue Across Buddhist Traditions, participant Sue Brown shared a reflection on the power of hearing teachers from different Buddhist traditions explore liberation through dialogue, practice, and shared inquiry.

Her reflection speaks to the openness, humility, and inspiration that emerged in the Dharma Hall, and to the renewed sense that freedom is possible through the many paths of Buddhist practice.

What changes when we see that nothing exists separately?

In this residential retreat, Peggy Rowe-Ward and Diane Little Eagle invite participants to explore the practice of interbeing through meditation, silence, movement, music, and time in nature. Together, we will deepen our understanding of interconnectedness and the ways it can inform how we live, speak, and relate to all beings.

This retreat will also include an opportunity to receive the Five Mindfulness Trainings in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, and time to honor the memory of Larry Ward.
