Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past quarter century.

Today, thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds are participating in service projects to honor Dr. King’s legacy on MLK Day of Service.

Whether involved in community discussions, service projects, or even ordinary days of service at their host sites, we'd like to thank all of our AmeriCorps team members for making today another successful Day of Service.

At Maplehill School & Farm, VYDC members Eleanor and Ryan recently harvested a diverse bounty from the pumpkin patch. The fruits/gourds of their labor will be eaten or carved by students at the school as a part of fall festivities. For VYDC members at Maplehill, tending the farm is a regular part of service and is integrated with individualized, land and project-based education.

Maplehill is still looking for the next AmeriCorps member to serve with VYDC. Visit our website to learn more about AmeriCorps, and what service in Vermont could mean for you!

This past August, VYDC AmeriCorps members Addison and Camie organized and led a "Four Elements" camp for youth at the Willowell Foundation, a week full of nature exploration and creative roleplaying inspired by the cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Addison and Camie managed adult volunteers and taught youth an array of skills, including how to safely start a campfire, how to do basic mindfulness exercises, and how to bake pizza from scratch, all in ways relevant to the camp theme.

Willowell is still looking for the next AmeriCorps member to serve with VYDC and continue programs like this one. As the VYDC AmeriCorps member serving in the city of Winooski's Parks & Recreation Department, Miruna Muresan was instrumental throughout the summer in providing enriching camps for Winooski youth at no cost to their families. During the last week of August, Miruna devised activities and managed volunteers for a five-day "Junior Park Rangers" camp, where campers explored nature spots around Winooski, engaged in physical activities, and learned about the ecology of the town’s public parks. At the end of the week, campers took home tree identification booklets Miruna had created filled with leaf rubbings they collected.

Winooski is still looking for the next AmeriCorps member to serve with VYDC and continue programs like this one. If you or someone you know is interested in service, all of our positions are available to browse online, and we’re always here to answer any questions you have about AmeriCorps, Vermont, or what it means to serve with VYDC.
