Helping Hands for Vulnerable Children

Helping Hands for Vulnerable Children HHVC provides physical, social & educational support for orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda. Through the years, the project has evolved and grown.

In 2016, Tom and Prudy (Barrett) Nelson with their Ugandan partners, Rev. Mutabuzi Emmanuel and Dr. Atakunda Jonathan, began an effort to support and educate orphans and vulnerable children in SW Uganda. The 21children currently in the program are provided safe housing, educational and physical/emotional support. Helping Hands for Vulnerable Children (HHVC), a 501c3 organization, was formed to pro

vide financial support to continue and help grow this important mission. For those young people willing to do the hard work, HHVC is committed to helping them achieve the academic highest level they can. Our goal is not just to educate children but to grow and equip FUTURE LEADERS who will help lead their communities out of poverty. Due to illnesses such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, many children are left orphaned. These kids are low-hanging fruit for those who wish to exploit them. Recent reports indicate 10,000+ children in Uganda are currently being used for forced labor and sexual exploitation. That number increases daily. HHVC’s mission is to protect vulnerable children from those who wish to harm them and provide the tools they need to be transformed into empowered adults. We are also committed to improving our community by giving people a "hand up". To that end, we have a micro-financing program to assist budding entrepreneurs start their journey to prosperity. While we seek self-sufficiency through a piggery, grain-milling and a poultry farm, there are many, many more children in need of help who are beyond our financial reach. We welcome support and invite you to make a difference in a child's life.

After the parents, guardians and volunteers greeted the HHVC team with singing, dancing and speeches, they presented us with these gorgeous baskets and all of this fruit. Their generosity of spirit and gratitude know no bounds. The colorful basket on the right was hand made by this lovely lady! So much grace and talent.

We can no longer celebrate birthdays at school as it makes the other kids feel bad. So, we do a group birthday party when they are home on break. Happy Birthday to Martin, Tasha, Kevin, Grace and Alicia! They shared a few cakes with our other kids, had some fun and opened presents. A good time was had by all!

It's so great to see our kids happy and celebrating life! So different than what their lives were before.

The kids had the best time getting together. They eat good food, play games, read and get some motivational talks on self-confidence and leadership. Thank you, Evelyne, for organizing and hosting these! You recognize the importance of community and family for these children.

Good luck to our students!

Good luck to our students!

Term Two is here, and our kids are ready!

As the new term starts, every one of our kids is receiving full scholastic materials to help them go through the school term without any hindrance.
No missing books, pens, mattresses bedsheets and everything, just the tools they need to learn, grow, and give it their best.

We couldn’t make this happen without our amazing sponsors and well-wishers. Your support is what keeps these kids in class, confident and focused on their future. Thank you for believing in them and standing with us.

One of our vehicles got stuck in the mud. While we were waiting for it to get pushed out, we stopped by this house...a friend of a friend. Just dropped in. This lovely lady gave Dr. Prudy this gorgeous basket she had made by hand. It has pieces of magazines woven into it for color. The Ugandans are so generous and kind.

These are the best boys! Full of mischief but hardworking and determined to succeed!

This is the best school in the district. As you can see, it's not great. We wish there was a better one to send our kids to. :-(

Ezra is one of our first students. He was 13 years old...malnourished, dirty, dressed in rags and barefoot. His mother had died and his father had abandoned him a few years before. He was living in a mud hut way out by itself in a rural area. No neighbors to call upon for help. It was missing a wall so there was no security for him at all. No electricity. The only "kitchen" was 3 rocks outside to put a pan on. He wanted to be a doctor.

Ezra is now in pre-med. We are so proud of his resilience and determination!

There are more kids like Ezra just waiting to be helped. Please check out our website hh4vc.org.

Alicia's father died and her mother abandoned her to live with her grandmother. She still returns to her grandmother's home when on school break.

We are so grateful for her sponsors who have given her a chance to rise above a lifetime of poverty. Alicia wants to be a nurse. With her brains, work ethic and determination to succeed, we are confident she will be a great one!

We have kids who still NEED SPONSORS! For $50/mo or $600/year you can give a child a future filled with purpose. Please be that person for a very needy child. Go to hh4vc.org to learn more.
