This world is ever-changing and it’s easy to feel ungrounded and scared.

The Earth and all of her plants teach us so much about friendship.

Can you imagine a flower feeling jealous of another flower? Or worrying that it couldn’t bloom at the same time as another bloom?

No.

Flowers know they can all bloom at the same time. They lift each other up and are beautiful together and they know that the more flowers the better!

When we gather in circle and learn from the flowers, we receive the teachings of the Earth. We receive the teaching of friendship, of community, of giving and receiving, of mutuality and interdependence.

We learn to share ourselves vulnerably, let our tender flowers be seen. We learn to see one another with admiration, not with judgement or envy. We learn to see each unique being as a flower, as a precious expression of beauty, leaning in with curiosity and awe.

When I started making Earth altars 15 years ago, I was amazed at how much beauty is here on the Earth that I hadn’t been noticing until I was gathering things to make altars.

Making Earth altars benefits your nervous systems by inviting you to slow down, notice beauty, and make art. Our systems are wired for this kind of beauty making.

Whenever I’m struggling to find peace in my being, I can trust that if I go outside and make an altar, I will feel better when I’m done.

Making an earth altar doesn’t take much time and doesn’t cost any money. You can do it with friends or alone. You can sing while you gather, you can be silent and listen to the birds. You can cry, make offerings, ask for help.

The Earth listens.

At the end of September we had the honor of harvesting the rainbow corn patch together.

This seed is landrace dent corn we’ve been growing for 14 years, starting as Daymon Morgan’s Kentucky butcher from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. It comes in rainbow colors and grows over 12’ tall. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

We all went silently into the tall stalks of mother maize, meeting her with reverence and presence. One by one we harvested her ears.
🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽

We peeled back her husk with glee and awe, revealing the multicolored universes hidden beneath. We sat in circle in silence with full presence as we shucked and sorted this years bounty. In this world of overwhelm, chaos and multitasking it’s such a welcomed break to just do one thing at a time with focus.

This beautiful grain is now drying out and will become food for our community through the winter and years to come and next year’s seed.
