Today marks the last official day of the 2026 season’s FRCC Farmington River Steward Program 💙

The stewards had an amazing summer full of outreach, learning experiences, and community engagement. 👥

Here’s a peek at just some of the beautiful sights and experiences along the Upper Wild & Scenic Farmington River 🌱

Although the program has come to a close for the summer, protecting the river happens every day. Even as the months get cooler and the summer fun winds down, always remember to:
💡Pack in what you pack out
💡No glass, No trash
💡Everyone can be a steward of the river

For this week's FRCC Summer River Steward Team Member Spotlight, we are recognizing Nate! Hi my name is Nate, and I’m very excited to be a part of the river stewards team this year! This is my first year in the program and I’m from New Fairfield, CT. I am a senior and am pursuing a double major in Political Science and Climate Change Studies at Central Connecticut State University. I have had many great experiences over the summer hosting many fun and engaging events teaching about the importance of the Farmington River for the environment and for our community. I’ve also loved helping keep our river clean by doing trash clean up. Outside of the FRS, I enjoy traveling, hiking, running, football, and just spending time outdoors. I’m thankful for being a part of such a wonderful team and can’t wait to see where the future of the program goes!
Nate has been a fantastic member of our team all summer long!

What a productive and beautiful triple header along the incredible Wild & Scenic Farmington River! 🌊

The day included a community river cleanup, a Paddle Event at Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, and a special thank-you gathering for the 2026 Farmington River Steward Team at beautiful Main Stream Canoes & Kayaks.

Many thanks to everyone who came out today and helped make all three events such a memorable day! 💚🛶

We’re grateful for everyone who continues to care for, enjoy, and protect this incredible river and its surrounding communities—for today, tomorrow, and future generations. 🌿

Don't Miss Our River Cleanup & Family Paddle on Sunday-August 9🌊🚣

Join the Barkhamsted Recreation Department and the FRCC River Steward Team this Sunday, August 9, for a fun day of giving back and enjoying the beautiful Farmington River!

🗑 River Trash Cleanup
10:00 AM–12:00 PM
📍 Barkhamsted Town Garage, Route 44

Help keep the Wildvand Scenic Farmington River beautiful by helping to remove litter from the riverbanks and waterways. Gloves and trash bags will be provided—just bring your enthusiasm (and waders if you'd like to help in the water)!

Then cool.off at our Paddle Event!!

🚣 Paddle with the River Stewards
2:00–4:00 PM
📍 Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, 41 Bridge Street, Collinsville

Cool off with a relaxing afternoon on the Farmington River while paddling alongside the FRCC River Stewards. Choose a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy one of Connecticut's most scenic waterways while learning about the importance of protecting this incredible natural resource.

Register by Thursday, August 6! Advance registration is required so we can reserve the proper equipment and staffing.

Cost:
• $25 per person (includes kayak or paddleboard, paddle, and life jacket)
• $10 if you bring your own equipment
• $5 parking/boat launch fee payable to Collinsville Canoe & Kayak
• Open to adults and families. Children must be age 6 or older and able to swim. Life jackets are required.

Whether you join us for the cleanup, the paddle, or both, you'll be making a difference while enjoying a great day outdoors with family and friends.

For this week's FRCC Summer River Steward Team Staff Spotlight, we are recognizing Nick!

Hi, my name is Nick Drouin, I love to fish, ski and hike. I am a high school senior who is majoring in environmental science next year at Stonehill College. This summer I'm working as a river steward because I love spending time on the river fishing, and I wanted to find a way that I can give back to the community while also furthering my knowledge in the field I'm pursuing.
