The Bardstown Main Street Program seeks to create an environment and atmosphere in Bardstown that promotes a renewed sense of community pride, while simultaneously providing a healthy and viable place for people to live, work,

conduct business, shop, and recreate. These ongoing objectives are being accomplished by a collaborative partnership with Nelson County Economic Development Agency, Bardstown Tourism Commission and volunteers who are dedicated and committed to the future well-being of downtown Bardstown.

This is photography the way it was done nearly 170 years ago, and now you can experience it right here in downtown Bardstown!! 📸😎

Bardstown Old Time Portraits is now offering authentic tintype photography using the same wet plate process developed in the 1850s. Each portrait is photographed and handcrafted directly onto a metal plate, creating a completely one of a kind keepsake.

You’ll even get to watch as what looks like a blank plate transforms into your portrait right before your eyes. No film negative and no digital process used to create the original. The plate inside the camera becomes the photograph you take home.

Pair the experience with their period inspired clothing and you’ll leave with a portrait that genuinely feels like it was made generations ago. 😍

Tintypes are available in 4x5, 8x10 and 11x14 sizes.

Then and now. More than 120 years of Bardstown history. 🤎

George Payne, David Johnson, and Alex Hamilton purchased the land at First and Brashear in 1903. By 1905, the Bardstown Colored Grade School was open, becoming Nelson County’s first public school for Black children. Students attended here until 1923, when a larger school was built across the street.

On April 10, 2026, the Bowman Cherry Center reopened, continuing the site’s legacy as a place for learning, creativity, and community connection.

Its restoration came through a partnership between the Nelson County Black Citizens Arts Council and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, helping preserve this important piece of Bardstown’s history for future generations. ✨

Our final stop in our little museum series is one everyone needs to see. 🤎

Inside historic Spalding Hall, the Oscar Getz Museum of Bourbon History tells the story of distillation in Bardstown and across the United States, from early distilling and Prohibition to the Kentucky bourbon we know and love today.

You’ll find rare bottles, old stills, vintage advertising, artifacts, and so many little pieces of history that make you appreciate Bardstown even more. With more than 1,500 rare and one of a kind bottles in the collection, there is seriously so much to take in.

✨ A little did ya know: The Oscar Getz Museum opened in 1984 and has been free to visit ever since. Just how the Getz family wanted it. 🤎

The National Civil War Battles of the Western Theater Museum sits right here on Bardstown’s Museum Row, preserving the stories, artifacts, and personal belongings connected to the Civil War’s Western Theater.

Home to one of the nation’s largest collections of Civil War artifacts, it gives visitors a closer look at the people and moments that shaped our country—and Kentucky’s place in that history.

Just beyond the entrance, you’ll also find Old Bardstown Village, a separate outdoor collection of historic Kentucky log buildings that makes this stop even more special.

Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or are visiting Bardstown for the weekend, this is one everyone should take time to experience.

From backyard BBQ to bigtime festival — Buttermilk Days Festival is back right here in Downtown Bardstown! 🎶
The 32nd Annual Buttermilk Days Festival returns August 27–29 with three days of food, music and community fun!

Thursday kicks things off with the 17th Annual Wine Tasting & Wild Meat Buffet, followed by Big Black Cadillac taking the stage Friday night. Then Saturday is packed from morning to night with the famous Buttermilk Breakfast, the Miss Buttermilk Festival Pageant and a street concert featuring DVL Review + more live music and DJs.
