Never leave water sitting in a bucket without an escape (like a thick stick) in the bucket from bottom to top.
💦 The Water Trough/Bucket:
"I WANTED TO DRINK, I STAYED TO DIE."
🆘 The Scenario: The Fatal Attraction
In summer heat or winter drought, any open source of water—whether it’s a deep bucket, a slick plastic garbage can with rain inside, or a smooth-sided livestock trough—becomes an irresistible magnet for thirsty wildlife.
“I WANTED TO DRINK, I STAYED TO DIE.”
🌊 The Reality: The Prison of the Slick Side
The animal isn’t drowning because it can’t swim—it’s drowning because it can’t climb out.
“Water is vital, but the smooth sides of your bucket are a prison. Once I fall in, I swim until I collapse from exhaustion. Just put in a stick or a rock that sticks out. A simple escape ramp saves a life.”
1️⃣ The Mechanics of the Trap (The Unseen Side)
The Swimming Reflex: Small mammals (squirrels, chipmunks, mice) and even many birds are excellent swimmers, but they lack the strong grip and friction needed to scale a vertical, smooth surface (plastic, metal, slick ceramic).
Exhaustion is the Killer: The animal doesn’t drown instantly. It swims in circles, expending immense energy in a desperate search for footing. Eventually, hypothermia (even in warm weather, water is cooler than air) and caloric depletion lead to total exhaustion and drowning.
The Scale Factor: For a small animal like an Eastern chipmunk or a young Eastern gray squirrel, even a 2‑foot‑deep bucket can be an impossible barrier.
2️⃣ Victims Across the Board
This trap affects a wide range of vulnerable American species:
Mammals: Squirrels, chipmunks, shrews, mice, and even small opossums and raccoons.
Birds: Fledglings or birds that misjudge a landing.
Amphibians/Reptiles: Frogs, toads, and salamanders, which fall in easily and often cannot find purchase on slick surfaces.
🤝 Our Duty: The Simple Rescue Ramp
The solution is immediate, free, and universally applicable wherever open containers are present.
🪜 The Simple Act
If you have any container that holds water—trash cans, rain barrels, livestock troughs, kiddie pools, or deep gardening buckets—place inside:
A rough-surfaced stick or branch
A wide plank of wood
A stack of rough-textured rocks
✅ The Requirement
The escape ramp must extend from the bottom of the container up and over the lip to the ground outside, ensuring the animal can walk completely free without facing another vertical barrier.
The most common causes of accidental drowning are human infrastructure and human oversight. A one‑minute fix can prevent a needless death.
