🐓 Ms. Baskin’s Intro to Ag students are wrapping up the semester by learning about horses in honor of the KY Derby last weekend.

Today we were given the opportunity to tour Spy Coast horse farm. We first visited their rehabilitation center, where horses are put through therapies such as red light, vibration plates, and water treadmills.

We then got to see the training arenas and barns where we saw horses being groomed, tacked up, and untacked.

Lastly, we got to meet the stallions, pregnant mares, and newborn foals. The horses were so friendly to our kids and were so happy to get all the love and pets!

We learned so much about each aspect… including that these horses live more luxuriously than we do!! We already can’t wait to come back! 🐓

This morning our 8th graders ventured to EKU Meadowbrook Farm for a facility tour! This farm is used for research and outreach for EKU, and focuses on students learning by doing. Students enrolled in the agriculture program take classes on the property focusing on animal science and livestock management. This farm is home to one of the few robotic milking parlors in the state. The farm is close to 1,1000 acres featuring swine, sheep, beef, and a dairy operation. We visited their cattle working facility modeled after Dr. Temple Grandin’s design, which was pretty neat! Ended with a visit to the February calves, and new March lambs- unfortunately they wouldn’t fit on the bus, but we did try! Thank you EKU for being such awesome hosts!

Some big (and little🐣) things happening for OKH AG Department! Recently our chapter was awarded an $2500 Ag Achiever grant from the Kentucky FFA Foundation for the construction of a chicken coop! Ms. Baskinā€˜s classes have been busy incubating the eggs, and some of Mr. Goodlettā€˜s classes have been building the coop and runšŸ“šŸ”

Over the next few months we hope to make this a laying hen operation where students will be in charge of collecting eggs, selling to teachers and staff, and potentially adding to their own flock as SAE projects. We are just a little excited to see the final product, but for now enjoy some of the groundwork! ļæ¼
