Why is Fostering So Important?

Basic Requirements to Foster

To become a foster parent in Kentucky, you must meet these core criteria:Age: Be at least 21 years old.Financially Stable: Have an independent source of income that covers your household's daily needs.Home Environment: Own or rent a safe, secure home with adequate space for a child.Background Checks: Pass criminal background, FBI fingerprint, and child abuse and neglect checks for all adults in the home.Training and Study: Complete required pre-service preparation training, paperwork, and an approved home study.System Overview and ChallengesCurrent Numbers: Over 8,000 children are in out-of-home care across the state, with many waiting for permanent adoption.System Strain: A recent state audit highlighted a severe shortage of traditional foster homes. Appalachian Children’s Home and Bluegrass Foster Services have been busy connecting with families throughout our communities at local school open houses and back-to-school events. These opportunities have allowed our team to meet parents, students, educators, churches, and community members while sharing free goodies and, most importantly, raising awareness about the services available to children and families through ACH and Bluegrass Foster Services.

President Michael Addison and his wife, April, recently had the privilege of attending Lynn Camp High School’s Open House, where they were able to share about Bluegrass Foster Services, connect with families, and even have the opportunity to pray with several families.
Our Bluegrass Foster Services team in Berea also participated in a community back-to-school event at Church on the Rock in Berea, helping us reach families beyond the school setting and build new connections within the community.
In Barbourville, the Bluegrass Foster Services team hosted a back-to-school event at the Chicken House Music Barn, providing another opportunity to connect with local families, share resources, and let the community know more about the support and services available through Bluegrass Foster Services.

We are thankful for every opportunity to be present in the communities we serve, share the love of Jesus, connect with families, and help more people learn about the resources and support available through Appalachian Children’s Home and Bluegrass Foster Services.

Bluegrass Foster Services has been hitting the halls of local high schools and elementary schools during their Back-to-School Open Houses! We’ve loved connecting with parents, students, and school communities while sharing free goodies but most importantly, bringing awareness to Bluegrass and the services we provide to children and how they can make a difference in a child’s life.

Appalachian Children's Home is grateful to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) Community Grant Program to purchase three Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for our campus.
With eleven buildings spread across campus, having lifesaving equipment readily available is essential. These AEDs will help ensure our staff can respond quickly during a medical emergency while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
We sincerely thank ARH for investing in the safety and well-being of the children and staff we serve.
