Oh, the times they are a changing! If you do not change with the times, they will change without you.

Our own member, Officer Chris White shared the changes that have occurred during his career as a police officer. He started in 1994 in Barberton having attended the police academy in 1993 and anticipates retiring in June 2027.

Some changes include:
Then:night stick, large mag light, heavy leather equipment belts , hand written reports, calling in on pay phones to keep scanners/listeners from getting a jump on calls, heavy /thick bullet proof vests, memorize all the streets, pepper spray, ma*****na.

Now: Drones, tasers, bicycle units, light weight vests, cameras, cell phone, computers, gps in cars and body camera, encrypted radios, he**in, narcan.
Less schools, bars and traffic lights. Handling domestic violence calls.

When asked what his favorite “cop”’show was growing up Chis said Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues.

Thank you for sharing the changes that have occurred over your career and thank you for what you do every day to make our city safer.

We were honored to have our member and mayor, Shorter Griffin as our speaker last week.
Shorter gave us an update of many things going on in the city.

He started off reminding everybody that mum festival is this weekend with lots of activities.
He then shared that the former Summit County DD building will be used for city council, mayor, finance, utilities department, and some of the building department. Targeted move is April 2027.
The law department police, and jail will remain where they are.
There is also a master plan in the Works please get involved and share your thoughts and ideas.
A closing thought was there are lots of positive things going on in the city.
