Few sounds say "summer in Wisconsin" quite like the low, booming call of an American bullfrog drifting across the water at dusk. 🐸🌅

If that familiar chorus has started up near your pond or wetland, breeding season is underway. American bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) call primarily to attract mates and defend their territories.

Only the males call, producing their deep, bass-heavy "jug-o-rum" sound by forcing air between their lungs and a large vocal sac.

Do you want to be more in tune with nature and better understand the changes on your land throughout the year? 🦋

The Aldo Leopold Foundation's gorgeous 2027 Phenology Calendar is here and ready to assist you with these goals!

What is phenology? Phenology is the study of the timing of seasonal events—and observing these changes throughout the year can grant you a deeper understanding and appreciation of what's happening in your biotic community.

In the 2027 edition, monthly sidebars by the Foundation's Senior Fellow, Dr. Stan Temple explore how changing weather and climate conditions impact different species. Oh, and the photography? Gorgeous, of course.

A work of art, an exciting learning tool, a new addictive hobby, and a way to give back to the land? What could be better? Get your calendars today at https://ow.ly/NQ3u50Z6cQH

Special thanks to McFarlanes' Retail Center - Sauk City and Wisconsin Cranberries for sponsoring the 2027 Phenology Calendar.

Comedy and conservation make the perfect pair! 🌲🤣

Charlie Berens is teaming up with Aldo Leopold Foundation for a special benefit program, and a donation of $25 to support ALF's work gains you access to this special virtual program.

From deer camp and fishing trips to walks through the woods, spending time outdoors is a quintessential part of Midwestern culture. And no one knows that better than Wisconsin’s own Charlie Berens — a comedian, best-selling author, and journalist known for his wildly popular sketch and stand-up comedy that spotlights the Midwest (Manitowoc Minute).

Join The Aldo Leopold Foundation June 4 at 7PM for a special edition of Land Ethic Live where they'll talk with Charlie about how he uses comedy to connect people, how he explores Midwestern culture, and how his own land ethic is evolving. This event is virtual!

Laughs and learning guaranteed — it'll be a hoot – Oh, yeah, you betcha!

While you're seeking shade on a sweltering summer afternoon, you're not alone. Your woodland is full of neighbors doing exactly the same thing!

White-tailed deer bed down in the cool, shaded understory during the heat of the day, conserving energy until evening temperatures drop and they move out to feed. Watch for their resting spots on your early morning or evening walks.

Birds are working the canopy for relief too. The dense tree cover that keeps you comfortable also gives songbirds, woodpeckers, and others a reprieve from direct sun. If you have a water source on your property, keep an eye on it. Summer is one of the best times to observe birds coming in to drink and bathe.

A healthy woodland isn't just good for you on a hot day. It's a lifeline for the creatures that call it home year round!

If you're outside this summer, you MUST be tick aware! 🚨

Adult blacklegged (deer) ticks are already active this year. In Wisconsin, between 20-60 percent of adult ticks are infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

However, the risk of getting Lyme disease is higher with bites from nymphal ticks, which are most abundant in June and July, because they are so tiny and difficult to find.

A familiar native plant begins to bloom this week! 🌼

Black-eyed Susans are a classic fixture of Midwestern prairies, meadows, and roadsides.

While the common Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is most famous, the taller Sweet Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia subtomentosa) is also native to the state. Be on the lookout for blooms soon!

Pollinators play a big impact in your woods, and are important to consider in your year-round woodland plans. 🐝

Natural areas, including your woodlands, can play a crucial role as refugia for native pollinators. In fact, those pollinators will keep your woods healthier.

Learn more about attracting pollinators and the role they play in the article below! 👇🏼

Summer woodland work doesn't have to mean sweating through the hottest part of the day. Your woods are actually one of the coolest places you can be, but when you venture out matters!

Early morning is prime time: temperatures are lower, wildlife is active, and there's something special about walking your land as it wakes up. Evening works too, especially for a quiet check-in after the day cools down.

When you do head out, come prepared. Drink water before you feel thirsty, wear light layers, and take breaks in the shade you've worked so hard to protect. ☀️
