Jane's Journey Home for Dogs

Jane's Journey Home for Dogs JJH is a 501(c)3 sanctuary offering retirement and hospice to aging shelter dogs to live out their lives with dignity.

We believe companion animals contribute positively to our quality of life and have much to teach us about patience, respect, responsibility, loyalty and unconditional love. We believe every pet deserves to live out their golden years, months, weeks or even days with dignity in a place of love, security and peace. We believe at times it is appropriate to make an end-of-life decision based on a dete

riorating quality of life and are here to help animals peacefully and respectfully through that journey. We believe in honest and open conversations, thinking outside the box, and making decisions that are in the best interest of the animal. We believe in providing educational support, advocacy, and alternative solutions for all pets to have an equal opportunity for a happy healthy life, no matter how long that may be.

Wednesday Wishlist

We are always in need of high-quality canned food for our seniors, but this week we're hoping you can help us replenish a very special favorite.

Lillian's entire diet consists of Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Stew canned food. While many of our other seniors find it absolutely delectable as well, for Lillian it is much more than a tasty meal. It keeps her eating consistently without upsetting her sensitive elderly digestive systemโ€”a delicate balance that can be difficult to achieve with senior dogs.

As our dogs age, finding foods that are both nutritious and gentle on their systems becomes increasingly important. When we discover something that works well, we try our best to keep it available for them.

Can you help us stock up?

If you'd like to help, donations can be sent directly through our wishlists:

Burton would like everyone to know that this is not the back of the couch.

It is his observation deck.

From here he can monitor snack distribution, volunteer activity, dog shenanigans, and any suspicious movements involving treats.

We suspect he takes his job very seriously.

***LOLA UPDATE #2***

Phew! It certainly has been a bit of a whirlwind of changes around the sanctuary lately with our sassy littles. Thank you so much for baring with us while we take time to take care of our special seniors.

First, the good news.

Lola's dental surgery was a success, and she is recovering beautifully.

Thanks to the recovery plan developed with our veterinarians, her pain has been well managed and she has bounced back faster than any of us expected. In fact, she ate a hearty supper her very first evening back at the farm and hasn't looked back since. It is almost as if she knows the worst is behind her and that more comfortable days are ahead.

Seeing her eat enthusiastically without the pain of severe dental disease has been incredibly rewarding for all of us.

Unfortunately, hidden behind this successful dental is a sad reminder of the damage that years of neglect can leave behind.

Many people don't realize that dental disease is not confined to the mouth. When severe infection is left untreated, bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. Over time, this can damage major organs, including the heart.

We believe this may be exactly what happened to Lola.

While she was under anesthesia, we took the opportunity to perform chest radiographs and get a better picture of what was happening with her significant 5 out of 6 heart murmur.

The news was not what we had hoped for.

The radiographs showed that Lola's heart is significantly enlarged.

When the heart begins to struggle, the entire body feels the effects. The heart is responsible for delivering oxygen rich blood to every organ and tissue. As the heart becomes less efficient, the body works harder to compensate. Over time, this can place stress on the lungs, kidneys, liver, and other organs as blood flow and circulation become compromised.

The good news is that, at this time, Lola's lungs appear clear.

That means she is not showing signs of congestive heart failure, which occurs when fluid begins accumulating in or around the lungs and causes difficulty breathing. Because her lungs are still clear, Lola continues to feel like herself. She is still energetic, playful, demanding attention, and finding ways to make us laugh every day.

To help support her heart, Lola has been started on Pimobendan, commonly known by the brand name Vetmedin.

This medication helps the heart pump more efficiently and reduces the workload placed on an already struggling heart. While it is not a cure, it is considered one of the most effective medications available for managing heart disease and helping dogs maintain a good quality of life.

Lola will need to remain on this medication for the rest of her life.

And this is where another beautiful part of the JJH story comes in.

Over the years, several families have donated unused heart medications after saying goodbye to their own beloved senior dogs. These gifts were given with the hope that another dog might someday benefit from them.

Because of those selfless donations, we had Pimobendan available and were able to start Lola on this important medication immediately without having to once again dip into our savings.

To the families who made those donations in memory of dogs they loved so deeply, thank you.

What may have felt like a small gesture at the time is now helping another senior dog receive the care she needs. Your dogs' legacies continue to live on through acts of kindness like this, and today Lola is benefiting from that love.

For us, her caretakers, there will be some adjustments moving forward. More monitoring. More medications. More attention to the little changes that can tell us how her heart is doing.

But for Lola?

Her journey hasn't changed at all.

She is still the same spicy little girl who charges around the sanctuary, demands affection, and greets each day with enthusiasm. She doesn't know her heart is enlarged. She doesn't know she has a serious diagnosis.

She only knows that her mouth doesn't hurt anymore, dinner tastes great, her bed is soft, and she is loved.

And honestly, that's exactly how we hope she continues to see the world.

***MELODY UPDATE***

After a long day at the veterinarian yesterday, Melody is now quietly recovering back at home here at the JJH Sanctuary.

When a senior dog like Melody suddenly becomes ill, there is often a delicate balance between doing enough diagnostics and not putting too much stress on an already fragile body. Because of Melody's significant heart condition, even routine treatments such as fluids can carry risks. We wanted answers before moving forward, so our veterinary team left no stone unturned.

Thankfully, the news was reassuring.

Melody's radiographs confirmed what we already knew: her heart remains enlarged. But the wonderful news is that there were no significant changes in her lungs or elsewhere to suggest that she has progressed into congestive heart failure. This allowed us to breathe a little easier and conclude that her heavier breathing was most likely related to the discomfort she was experiencing from her illness.

Her bloodwork brought even more encouraging news.

Not only are Melody's organs continuing to function well, but her liver values have actually improved since her last testing. For a little dog with several medical challenges, that is something worth celebrating. It tells us that the treatment plan we've carefully put in place is helping support her aging body exactly as we had hoped.

With those results in hand, we felt confident moving forward with supportive care for what appears to be a very unhappy gastrointestinal system. Melody received subcutaneous fluids and an anti-nausea injection to provide immediate relief. She is now recovering with the help of antibiotics, anti-diarrheal medication, anti-nausea medication, probiotics, and strict orders to get plenty of rest.

Of course, those orders also include being spoiled by our loving volunteers (at least as much as this fiercely independent little dachshund will allow!)

Thank you all for the prayers, healing thoughts, and love you have sent Melody's way. Knowing so many people are rooting for her means the world to us.

If you would like to help offset the cost of Melody's unexpected veterinary visit and medications, you can make a donation through our secure website at www.journeyhome4dogs.com or through our PayPal Giving Fund:

Our sweet Melody isn't feeling well today.

This morning, our little dachshund began vomiting and experiencing bouts of bloody diarrhea. Normally, Melody is more than eager for every meal and treat, so eager in fact to make our fingers greatful she hasn't many teeth, but today she has been noticeably quieter, slower, and reluctant to eat. An exam at the sanctuary also revealed mild dehydration and slightly labored breathing.

Given Melody's fragile condition and significant heart murmur, we decided not to wait and are on our way to a scheduled appointment with our veterinarian right away.

Every senior in our care is unique, and each deserves an individualized plan that puts their comfort and well-being first. Today, Melody's plan means seeking answers quickly and making sure she receives the support she needs.

Please keep brave little Melody in your thoughts and prayers as we work to discover what is causing her discomfort and help her feel better. โค๏ธ

***LOLA UPDATE #1***

Little Lola has officially joined the "gummy grin club!"

And honestly? We are just so relieved for her.

When Lola first came to the sanctuary, we knew her mouth was bad. Really bad. Her breath alone told us there was significant infection, and visually we could already see severe dental disease. But once radiographs were taken during her dental procedure, the true extent of the damage became heartbreakingly clear.

The bone loss in her lower jaw was extensive. In some areas, it had deteriorated so badly that Dr. Mary had to carefully consider whether removing certain deeply rooted teeth could actually fracture Lolaโ€™s jaw during surgery. We had discussed this possibility ahead of time and thought there was a chance she might keep her adorable little snaggle tooth simply because her jaw was in such a fragile state.

But the infection and damage had progressed too far.

Those roots were diseased. The surrounding bone was diseased. You could tell by the moth eaten look of her jaw bone in the X-rays. Some of her teeth we being reabsorbed while others were being pushed out of her mouth; her body desperately trying to rid itself of the pain and disease. Leaving them behind would have meant continuing pain, continued infection, and continued deterioration.

So they came out.

Imagine how our little girl must have felt every single day trying to eat, drink, chew, play, or even just hold her mouth closed comfortably. And yet through all of that, Lola was still running around the sanctuary doing zoomies, rolling over for belly rubs, bossing everyone around, and making us laugh daily with her giant personality.

Letโ€™s do the math here for a moment.

Dogs have 42 teeth.

Lola was already missing 31 before surgery.

The remaining 11 teeth all needed to be removed.

That equals years of unnecessary pain and suffering for a creature that doesn't deserve it.

Dogs hide pain incredibly well.

That is why dental health matters so much.

It is not just about bad breath. All dogs having bad breath is a myth and it is actually one of the first signs that dental care is needed. Dental disease affects the entire body. Infection in the mouth enters the bloodstream and impacts major organs including the heart, kidneys, and liver. Once organ damage occurs, it often cannot be reversed, only managed.

Please let Lola be a reminder to advocate for your pets. Routine dental care, yearly exams, dental cleanings, and daily dental chews truly matter. Preventative care costs hundreds less than advanced dental disease like Lolas requiring multiple extractions, lengthy anesthesia, radiographs, medications, and intensive recovery.

**********

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Mary and the entire surgical team at Sunrise Veterinary Services, Reedsburg, WI. Lolaโ€™s procedure was delicate and complicated because of both the severe bone loss and her significant 5/6 heart murmur. Her technicians monitored her constantly throughout surgery, adjusting and watching every detail to keep her safe, stable, warm, and comfortable, and again after surgery making sure she remained pain free. We are so grateful for the care they gave our spicy little girl.

Senior dogs like Lola are often prematurely euthanized in shelters because their care is expensive, complicated, and uncertain. But how could you meet a dog like this and not fight for her? She has so much life left in her. So much joy. So much love.

Because of your generosity, we were able to give Lola this second chance at comfort. Her dental procedure totaled $1,438 and so far we have raised $690 toward that cost. We did need to dip into our savings to move forward with her surgery and could still use help covering the remaining balance. So if you feel moved to be a part of Lola's life saving surgery please check out the DONATE button attached to our previous post here:

Seeing Lola now, curled up comfortably and beginning to heal, we know every single bit of this journey was worth it and we look forward to having her hopping around the sanctuary, sassy and joyful once again, but this time PAIN FREE!
