The other day we received an incredibly thoughtful email from one of our October 2021 grant winners, Marisa. 🤍

This just reminds us of why we do what we do and that our financial and medical assistance is making a difference in the diabetes community. 💪🏼

We have decided that ALL donations until May 1st will go directly to our medical assistance grant fund. Our next round of grants will be open for application in May and the more that is donated, the more we will be able to give to our grant winners that need help paying for supplies and doctors appointments.

You can donate at https://www.diastrongfoundation.com/donate 💙

“Diabetes is a really difficult disease to manage and treat correctly and I’m always trying new ways to keep myself in as tight control as possible. Another thing is just reminding myself that I'm going to have hard days and I'm not any worse of a diabetic or athlete because I had a bad day. Trying to have a positive attitude is honestly one the best ways to cope with diabetes struggles.”

Week #2 of our December Spotlight Series is live! Thank you so much Campbell for giving us insight into some of the struggles that come along with having t1d! 💪🏼 Check out the full post at the link in our bio. 🤗

Meet Campbell, our December Spotlight! 💪🏼

“My diagnosis was different from most people's. My parents started noticing some changes in me and immediately started doing research. I was having episodes where I felt “shaky” right before a meal or after I hadn't eaten for a while and also had an ER visit a few months before where I had sugar in my urine (even though my blood sugar was in range at that time). I was always tired and having “shaky” episodes almost every day, but because my A1C was only slightly elevated (“pre-diabetic” at 6.1) the doctors said I was ok. So, my mom bought a glucose meter and the next time I didn't feel good she tested my sugar, it was low! I then got an appointment set up with an endocrinologist who did lots of tests including antibody testing and glucose tolerance test. She told me I had type 1 diabetes. Because it was caught so early on I didn't go into DKA and wasn’t even put on meal time insulin! My body still was making some insulin, so I was put on a couple units of long acting insulin and that was it.”

For the entirety of December, we will be giving 100% of our donations to a 7 year old boy from Maine so that he can get on an insulin pump. He currently does not have insurance, so it will cost him roughly $300/month just for his pump supplies alone. Life with type one diabetes is already tough enough even with pumps and continuous glucose monitors, so let’s help this strong boy get on a pump and take control! 💪🏼

You can donate at https://www.diastrongfoundation.com/donate or Venmo us . Help us spread the word so that we can raise as much for him as possible. 💙

“There were many occasions that I was extremely low and also very hungry at the same time, so I would raid the fridge or pantry and not take any insulin at all and my number would skyrocket. There was one time where I believed my number was 28 so my mother brought me so many snacks and then an hour later my number was up near 300.”

This week, opens up about his struggles with type one diabetes. Check out the rest of the blog post at https://www.diastrongfoundation.com/blog 💪🏼

“I began to eat a lot healthier, which brought me to my honeymoon stage of diabetes and experiencing way more lows than highs. I was a lot heavier than most kids my age back then so going through this stage made me lose a lot more weight and I got a lot taller. So as my body was changing, I had to adjust my basal rates and dosages. I think the hardest part was just telling my friends that I got diagnosed. I remember walking through my middle school with my parents and it was in the middle of a school day. All my friends were there and I had just missed a week of school because of this and I was not the most extroverted person.”

We would like to introduce you to our November Spotlight, ! 💪🏼 He is a student athlete at Saint Joseph’s College in Maine and has had t1d since 13 years old. Thank you so much for opening up about your diagnosis, Matt! You can read the rest of his diagnosis story at https://www.diastrongfoundation.com/post/diastories-november-spotlight-on-matt 🤗
