Sometimes a child’s behavior is really a message saying, “I need you right now.” Big emotions, clinginess, tantrums, aggression, shutting down, or even acting extra silly can all be signs that a child is overwhelmed, tired, anxious, or struggling to communicate their needs. Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling, so their behavior often speaks for them. Instead of immediately asking, “How do I stop this behavior?” it can help to ask, “What is my child trying to tell me?” Connection, patience, and co-regulation can go a long way in helping children feel safe and understood. When children feel supported during their hardest moments, they learn that their feelings are manageable and that trusted adults will help them through them. Behavior is communication - and often, it’s a child asking for comfort, guidance, or connection.
