Happy … (does quick math) … 127th! wedding anniversary to French and Sarah Gilman! These two leaders shaped Banning from the late 1800s-1930s. Their lives were filled with community service.

SARAH was a teacher who fought for equal rights in education for Native American children on Morongo Reservation starting in the 1880s. As leader of what became the Banning Woman’s Club, she brought many improvements to the new community. Although as a woman she lacked many basic civil rights, including the right to vote, she was unstoppable.

FRENCH, oldest son of the pioneer Gilman family, became renowned with Sarah’s support as an expert on birds and native plants, while he led the community in agricultural and other work. That included more than a decade on the Banning City Council, including a stint as mayor. (Sarah’s diary more than once noted council meetings that ran past 1 am.)

Although French and Sarah didn’t live at the family ranch after getting married, you can learn more about this dynamic couple at the Gilman Historic Ranch and Wagon Museum, an official National Register of Historic Places landmark, and once a stagecoach stop, 1901 W Wilson St, Banning, open Tuesdays through Saturdays.
