For hundreds and hundreds of years, this mountain, Ayaqaych, (San Jacinto Peak) has been overlooking the people living in San Gorgonio Pass. This view of Ayaqaych is from a Banning site where many Native American people lived in older times. It later became an 1800s stagecoach stop and still later, the site of thriving groves that included renowned olives. Now it’s a park, the Gilman Historic Ranch and Wagon Museum in Banning. And it’s open Saturday, Dec.13, 2025, from 10 to 4 with all kinds of free family fun, along with food, vendors, and Santa. You’ll also have opportunities to see and experience how people lived in the 1800s, even ride in a stagecoach. See flyer in comments. Admission is $10 per vehicle, 1901 W Wilson St, Banning.

Hurray for International Mountain Day! We celebrate our local beautiful mountains every day.

All the pines on top of the mountains used to be people. They turned into pines when the creator died. They all cried and, crying, turned into pines. – Santos Manuel Kiika’ (Leader) of the Yuhaaviatam Clan of Maara’yam (Serrano Indians)

We the Yuhaaviatam or People of the Pines, hold deep respect and connection to our ancestral lands in the San Bernardino Mountains. We are committed to preserving and honoring these spaces, which have been integral to the creation and continuity of our story.
