National Poison Prevention Week, observed the third week of March, raises awareness about preventing poisonings, and v**es, which contain ni****ne and other harmful chemicals, can contribute to poisoning, especially for children and teens as well as pets.
Vapes contain ni****ne, a highly addictive and toxic substance, as well as other harmful chemicals. The liquid used in va**ng products, or e-liquid, can cause poisoning, especially in children, who may be exposed through accidental ingestion or exposure. Vapes also contain heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, and carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals). Va**ng can cause inflammation and irritation in the lungs, potentially leading to lung damage and other health problems. It is important to store v**e products and e-liquids out of reach and sight of children, and keep them in child resistant packaging. If someone is exposed to liquid ni****ne, remove any affected clothing and wash the area with soap and water. If ingested or inhaled, contact the Poison Help Hotline at 1-800-222-1222 for specific recommendations. This is a free service that provides trained healthcare professionals to answer calls. Also please contact Western Youth Network for locking pouches that can be utilized for child resistant packaging.

April is alcohol awareness month and underage drinking has many harmful effects on the developing brain that can be impactful for the rest of the youth’s life.

Here are some facts that you may not know about:
1. Emotional areas of the brain mature before the frontal cortex (helps manage impulse control). This is the reason for thrill-seeking, risky decision-making, and recklessness.
2. Youth are more responsive to the promise of rewards and threats (especially social threats) than adults. They place more importance on short-term rewards over future benefits.
3. Alcohol slows down brain activity, and the negative effect of alcohol lasts longer in a teenager’s brain than in an adult’s (up to 2 weeks).
4. When a teenager uses alcohol, they risk the normal development of good judgment and impulse control.
5. Underage drinking can also damage the memory and learning areas of the brain.

The image with this post goes through the short-term impairment and long-term consequences of underage drinking which go into why youth may drink underage for the short-term effects but there are long-term consequences that go along with those.
These include:
1. Youth are more likely to binge drink than adults because youth usually drink when they are with other youth and this leads to consuming more alcohol from watching their peers.
2. Binge drinking leads to blackouts, unplanned events, fights, accidents, and drunk driving which are things that can affect a teenager's life dramatically.
3. The brain is greatly impacted by alcohol especially when it is still developing. The brain does not fully develop until the age of 25 so consuming alcohol as a teenager can alter that brain development, increase inflammation in the brain, impact the chances of having substance abuse issues in the future, and increase the risk of alcohol-use problems in the future.

It is important to know about these risks and talk about them with friends and family to ensure youth are making smart decisions surrounding alcohol. For more information on underage drinking please visit talkitoutnc.org where you can read more about this important information!
