On March 6, across the United States families and loved ones remember and celebrate the lives lost to overdose. This day has become known as Black Balloon Day. 🧡

Black Balloon Day has become a national and international event, bringing awareness to overdose deaths. As with many things with the opioid epidemic, Black Balloon Day began with a family’s loss. Diane and Lauren Hurley began Black Balloon Day in remembrance of Greg Tremblay. Tremblay, a father of four, is the son-in-law of Diane and brother-in-law of Lauren and died of an overdose when he was 38 years old on March 6, 2015.🧡

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic. 🧡

On this day, we wanted to outline the Overdose Lifeline support and resources available for the individual, families, caregivers, and the community to help with the opioid public health crisis. To view these resources please visit www.overdoselifeline.org/events/black-balloon-day/ 🧡

March is National Nutrition Month! We wanted to share six healthy tips to have a healthier lifestyle.
* These include eating food according to your body needs. This means if your body is hungry, nourish your body by having a snack or meal and stopping eating when you’re full.
*Limit sugary foods or substitute fruits. This could mean limiting sugary desserts at school and replacing with an apple or fruit that you like.
*Ensure you eat the free breakfast and lunch provided by school if needed. Avery County schools provide a free breakfast and lunch that can help you if you’re unable to eat from home.
*Try to incorporate colorful vegetables and fruits into your diet.
*When eating fast food choose a lower calories option. This could mean getting a salad with protein or getting a small fry instead of large.
*Choose water instead of sugary drinks when going to the convenience store.
We know in our community these options can be expensive or hard to access. Feeding Avery Families and Ram’s Rack are resources in the area if you need help getting food.
