The streets of Bannack, Montana were once quite dangerous and violent. True to the old west tales, Emily Meredith, one of the town's few women wrote this in 1863: I don’t know how many deaths have occurred this winter but that there have not been twice as many is entirely owing to the fact that drunken men do not shoot well… bullets whiz around so, and no one thinks of punishing a man for shooting another...

Women’s History Month feature today will be Lucia Darling. Lucia Darling, niece of Sidney Edgeton, arrived with the Edgerton party in September 1863 to Bannack. She was 23 years old at the time and had been a school teacher since she was 16 years old in Tallmadge, OH. Lucia was eager to teach the children of Bannack and in October 1863 held classes in the front room of the Edgerton home. Where the roof was made of sod and the melting snow would soak through making it muddy inside the house. They had to improvise desks and chairs and books for learning. Students brought what books they had at home or from neighbors. While many people consider Lucia Darling, the governor's niece, the first schoolteacher, Emma Zoller and Miss Watson both taught for a time in Bannack. As for the first school that honor probably goes to Ft. Owen where a day school started in Jan. 1861.

We were in Bannack Saturday. We ate pleased to report that the siding / stairs project on the Masonic Lodge / School House is nearly completed. They are working on the stairs to the Lodge now. It looks very good. The new boards are being soaked in linseed oil so the boards are preserved on all sides before installing. They hope to finish the stairs in the near future if the weather stays nice.
