The Maine Troop Greeters of Bangor, Maine is a non-profit group of veterans and men and women supporting our armed forces serving overseas by greeting troops who arrive at Bangor International Airport. Day or night, rain or shine,it is our commitment to welcome each troop home from war and give a proper send off to each of the young men and women heading overseas. We accomplish this by being here to offer free cell phones to call a loved one, a snack to keep them going, and handshakes to let them know we care. armed forces serving overseas we will be here to greet them.

𝑡𝑬𝑾 𝑬𝑷𝑰𝑺𝑢𝑫𝑬: π‘Ύπ’‰π’š π‘©π’‚π’π’ˆπ’π’“?

If you’ve ever looked up and spotted a KC-135, C-17 or another massive aircraft over Bangor and wondered, β€œWhy are they here?”- this episode of 𝑢𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π‘­π’π’š is for you.

Episode 15 takes us behind the scenes at BGR Aviation with FBO Manager Dustin Gallagher to talk about a role Bangor has filled for generations. Our roots as Dow Air Force Base, our strategic location along the Great Circle Route, an 11,440-foot runway and nearly 3 million gallons of fuel capacity all help make BGR an important technical stop for aircraft traveling to and from destinations around the world.

But those things only explain why aircraft 𝒄𝒂𝒏 stop here. Dustin explains why so many 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 to.

BGR Aviation has built a worldwide reputation for extraordinary service, often turning aircraft quickly for fuel and support before sending crews, passengers and servicemembers back on their way. And as an Army veteran himself, Dustin understands that some of the missions arriving on our ramp carry meaning far beyond the aircraft.

Then, of course, there are the Maine Troop Greeters waiting inside our terminal, continuing a Bangor tradition of caring for those who serve that stretches across generations.

A small airport in Maine has a tradition nobody assigned it.

It started with a single homecoming during Desert Storm. Volunteers there have met every troop flight since, including the ones that land after midnight. A documentary once followed three of the longtime greeters into their seventies and eighties, still making the drive.

Every soldier gets the same thing: a handshake, a cookie, and a free phone call home.

Thirty-five years on, they have never missed one.
