Today, we remember and honor Peter Webb, one of the founders of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame, a member of the 2015 Maine Basketball Hall of Fame induction class, and one of the most respected figures in Maine basketball history, who passed away on May 20, 2026 at the age of 88.
A proud Houlton native, Peter dedicated his life to education, athletics, and mentorship. While serving more than 25 years as a teacher and school administrator, he also built a legendary officiating career that spanned decades — working more than 1,500 varsity basketball games, hundreds of baseball and softball contests, and shaping generations of officials and athletes across Maine.
Peter served as Maine Basketball Commissioner for 27 years and was widely recognized as one of the leading basketball rules experts in the country. His impact extended far beyond Maine through his leadership with the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, where he served as president and educator to officials around the world.
His passion for the game, commitment to fairness, and dedication to mentoring others helped shape Maine basketball into what it is today. Peter Webb’s legacy will continue to live on in every gym, every official, and every athlete influenced by his remarkable life.
