Hello All,
Former EMCC SVA Commander here.
Wanting to know if there is interest in keeping a chapter open here on campus?
I can come in to help get the ball rolling. In the past it has really helped the Veteran Community on campus to have a stream of contact with administration.
Thank you,
Scott Mitchell

Today, with the news of Anthony Bourdain’s su***de, I am reminded about how precious life is. 49/50 states have seen increases in su***de rates since 1999, some states have seen increases of nearly 60%!!! Maine has seen higher than average (national) rates in su***de; and I think it goes without saying veterans face extremely high rates of su***de.

So, I want to make this abundantly clear, I implore you, if you are struggling with any issues, mental, physical, spiritual, etc... people are here to help, please reach out to someone. Please don’t make a permanent decision for a temporary problem. No matter how hopeless your situations seems, I (Chris Cobleigh) will do everything that I can personally to help; even if it’s just getting you to the right people. Su***de is the problem, not the solution. Help is available! So please reach out!

Good Afternoon,

Tomorrow during Tech Day at EMCC, the SVA is hosting a LinkedIn workshop that will be focusing on building the professional online presence you want to have. LinkedIn is a tool that many recruiters and head-hunters use to find the best candidates for their companies, so it’s something you should want. The workshop is open to 12 people, so spots are limited, please let me know if you are interested in attending from 8-11am tomorrow in Katahdin. Thanks for the consideration!

Due to inclement weather, the meeting for 3/14/18 is postponed until 3/21/18.

Good Afternoon Veterans,

I was just curious if there are any of you out there struggling to meet your education goals, or anyone looking to get back into school? What can we do to help? Please let me know!

Good Morning Veterans,

I just wanted to take a moment and update you all on the happenings of SVA at EMCC lately. In October of 2017, a coalition of student veterans started back up the local EMCC chapter, focused on Veteran interest, volunteerism, and continuing to serve in any way we could. In the new year, new by-laws have been created, officers elected, volunteer opportunities planned, and fundraisers are in the works.

I, Chris Cobleigh, have been elected the President of the latest iteration of the SVA at EMCC, and would like to take this opportunity to invite any veteran, active duty, reservist, or national guard member to attend our bi-weekly meetings. I apologize for the short notice of today's meeting (2/28/18) but would encourage you to attend the meeting on the 14th of March at 1230 in the SVA lounge in Katahdin Hall. We would welcome any assistance, new members, or new ideas!

Further, we are putting together a fundraiser to sell .50cal bullet bottle openers! They will have our freshly designed chapter logo, Student Veterans of America, and EMCC engraved on them. Pictures, presale flyers, and prices to follow, for all those that are interested.

We are looking for some inputs on volunteer opportunities, and while we have a few ideas, or events planned, our intent is to serve as many people as possible, and to show how veterans are truly humble servants of their communities! We will be spending some time at the local Bangor Veteran's Home, and landscaping the flag pole on campus. But, we can do more, and again would like to invite you out!

Lastly, we have decided to host a resume' writing workshop in partnership with JMG's (Jobs for Maine Graduates) Karen McGrady. We are going to have a lunch and learn on 8 Mar at 1200. This information session will be focused on properly composing a cover sheet, resume type, and resources. While this session will provide some resources, it will primarily focused on getting personnel to write a resume that at a later session will be combed over and edited. This will be open to 10-12 people, current veteran students having first priority, but then I would like to open this to all veterans/AD/SR/NG.

Thanks for taking some time out of your day to consider joining us, or supporting the SVA at EMCC in whatever way you can! I look forward to seeing/hearing/or working with you in the future.

Thank You,
Christopher Cobleigh

ATTENTION ALL currently serving Maine military: Are you struggling financially this holiday season? Let the MFAC's Christmas Across Maine program help!

Christmas Across Maine is the MFAC's confidential, needs-based program for currently serving Maine Military members and their families, from ALL BRANCHES OF SERVICE (yes, that means you too Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Army Reserve!), that may be experiencing financial difficulties during the holiday season.

Christmas Across Maine served 114 military families last year, from several branches around the state. We anticipate this year will be even busier, and we are encouraging you to sign up as early as possible to ensure that we can pair you with a sponsor. While we hope to not have to turn anyone away, this program relies entirely on WONDERFUL sponsors willing to donate gifts and time, and we have to make sure that the demand can be met.

Single service members are also welcome to sign up! You do not need to be married to take part in the program; however, if you do list children on the registration, they need to be DEERS-eligible dependents.

The deadline for registration is December 7th.

To register, head over to www.jointservicessupport.org/Info/67C016 and click on the Registration tab.

A father, 10 year Army Vet and fellow Community College student is in the hospital with 7 gun shot wounds. After sounding the alarms and telling people to flee he turned and ran back, rushing the gunman. If you can afford to donate his family has set up a gofundme account to cover his medical bills and recovery expenses.https://www.gofundme.com/s75ge9y4

Yesterday my cousin Chris Mintz was shot 7 times while trying to protect others from the gunman at Umpqua Community College. He is a father, a veteran, a student, and now he's a hero. During the shooting both of his legs were broken and he is going to have to go through a ton of physical therapy....

Hello Past, Present and Future EMCC Veteran Students. The fall semester is only a few days away. I am sure most if not all of you are still working on the plans to make your class schedule and your lives work and looking at the prices of books online vs the book store. Some of you are hoping to get C's while others are looking to get or keep their Phi Theta Kappa membership. These are common student issues.

As veterans, we have a unique set of circumstances. Are you on the Post 9/11 or the MGIB, or maybe REAP. When is that check going to come? Almost always a week after the Business Office tells you that you need to pay now and at least 3 weeks after your professor is sick of you not having your books yet. If you haven't yet, I strongly urge you to see Candice Ward. I will warn you that the first week or two of school will be on a walk in basis, so get there early and plan to wait your turn. She can make sure all your paper work is in order, and she can offer advice on services if you need help financially or academically before it is too late. As someone who has had Candice pull my ass out of the fire after a paperwork snafu when I knew for sure, after confirming with someone that I was all set, I can't say strongly enough, do it now before you have a problem. The system works slow, so if you wait until the last min, it will not be done on time.

I will end there for now, and post some info about the SVA and the College later. Please like and or Share. Because this is a fairly small page Facebook limits the number of news feeds it sends these posts to. The more activity a post gets, the more likely other students who may need this info will see it.
