Greater Bangor Area Street Pastors

We have had a busy week in GBASP land! Training Friday, followed by patrol. Those crazy Holy Spirit connections worked during patrol, and we've been continuing to help connect a couple churches as well as local assistance for a friend who is unhoused. (Pray for a good housing situation, please!) Then a presentation Saturday to our United Women of Faith friends at North Brewer Eddington United Methodist Church.... and now it's somehow almost time for patrol again!

The temp was predicted to still be high after patrol started last night, so instead of trying to haul ourselves around on foot with heavy gear and hot uniforms, we picked to stock a couple coolers with ice and water in the afternoon, then drive out together and stop where we usually meet some groups of folks staying outside to offer icy cold water, tootsie pops, and snacks.

It was a good night of fellowship with the team, and people were pretty happy to have a cold drink as they got ready for the night ahead.

Ellie was a bit confused to hop in the car instead of walking up the hill, but she decided it was a pretty good patrol even though the huminz were being weird. She did her usual greeting work in the park and 2 people thanked us for bringing her to brighten their day.

Volunteers with the Greater Bangor Street Pastors spend Fridays conversing with homeless people around Bangor. It is one of several faith-based groups working on the issue as the city looks to develop a long-term plan.

so I missed the boat on getting this information out in a timely manner... but our friends at Needlepoint organized a cleanup around downtown. Next year i'll try to pay better attention and make sure we get the info out so that we can help pitch in to get this city looking a bit more tidy after the winter blahs left so many layers of trash behind!

‘That’s my favorite pastor, right there!’ Called out a voice on second st. As the team looked at each other trying to work out which one of us had spent enough time with this person to be a favorite, they crossed the street and came right up to… Ellie.

So we gave out an Ellie trading card, a tootsie pop, and had a nice chat for a couple of minutes.

We didn’t have a lot of involved conversation yesterday, but she definitely started a couple conversations we probably wouldn’t have had otherwise. One person said ‘oh cool! Your dog loves Jesus too!’ Which is probably true. someone who made snacks (feeding big crowds), met new people with kindness, and loved little children would be right up there on Ellie’s favorite list.

We had a good patrol in the sun. Downtown looks different with all the snow gone! There also is a lot of sand from winter and a bunch of trash visible now. We picked up a few things along the way and put them in trash bins, but it could sure use a bit more work to be ready for everyone to get back outside!

Do you know any youth who could use some mental health support geared for them? What about adults working with young people? If so, check out this Youth Mental Health summit happening next week in Bangor. Some of Ellie and Aubrey's fellow therapy dogs will be providing support at this event! Registration should be open through the weekend.
