Health equity means health equity for pets, too!
Today, Needlepoint Sanctuary put on our first ever low-barrier pop-up pet clinic! Thanks and kudos to Broadway Veterinary Clinic for the quality, dignified care they provided to our program participants’ pets and their commitment to accessibility.
We are grateful for Maggie and the veterinary student volunteers from UMaine for organizing the pet supplies drive and showing up to help. Your commitment to providing quality services to pets regardless of the financial status of their caretakers is inspiring! Big love to Together Place Peer Recovery Center for allowing us to use their space. An accessible location made all the difference!
We are also very proud of our program director, Jessy, for organizing this vitally important opportunity for low-barrier access to veterinary services.
We feel lucky to have worked with all of these amazing community partners, and look forward to working with them in the future.
People living in poverty often can’t afford medical care for their pets, or are forced to choose between getting their pets taken care of and taking care of themselves. Today, we were able to relieve some from having to make that decision. In total, we connected 10 pets with veterinary care, and even more with dog/cat food, toys, blankets, and other necessities.
Non-human relations can bring out the best in us. Many of the folks we work with have bonds with their pets that sustain them through the hardest of times. Helping people’s ability to keep and look after their pets is harm reduction, is su***de prevention, and supports many in their recovery journey.
