Bangor Greendrinks

Bangor Greendrinks 2nd Tuesday, 5-8pm
Greener By The Pint! The goal is to gather a lively mix of people interested in environmental and sustainability issues. All are welcome.

With its beginnings in 1989 at a pub in North London, Greendrinks gatherings now take place in over 525 cities in 51 countries and counting. It’s a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Greendrinks an organic, self-organizing network. Greendrinks gatherings usually take place

monthly on a fixed date and are simple and unstructured with generally no agenda or theme. Many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, and done deals. For more information on Greendrinks International, visit www.greendrinks.org. Bangor Greendrinks is part of the international Greendrinks network. Greendrinks is a free family friendly gathering. Everyone who loves the natural environment is welcome to join. Greendrinks happens on the second Tuesday of every month from 5:00pm to 8pm at a new location in the Bangor area. Cold beer and good food are always on hand. The goal of Greendrinks is simple: good times shared among people working in, or interested in, environmental and sustainability issues. Our friends at are gearing up for their 34th year in Downtown Bangor, with a parade and festival taking place on June 27th. BBC is getting in on the fun by co-hosting this event and then starting their regular weekly trivia just after 7 pm.

This will be an outdoor event in BBC’s beer garden. BBC will be pouring alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, plus there will be snacks to munch on. Don’t forget to bring your own drinking vessel!

While it’s tempting for many to get outside this time of year to clean up gardens, consider waiting a little longer to help out our pollinators. Many native bees, butterflies and moths are still overwintering in dead stems, under leaves and in the soil, and they won’t begin to emerge until it’s warmer, some even until late May. 🐝🐝🐝

Some indicators of when it’s safe to do garden cleanup without harming pollinators include waiting until overnight temperatures are reliably in the 50s, when lawns are growing enough to justify regular mowing, and/or when apple trees are done blooming.

One caveat to this is that cutting old stems back to 12-24” above the ground in the early spring can provide some new nesting sites for bees that begin to emerge. New plant growth will eventually cover the stems in the garden.

See this Xerces Society page for more info.: https://xerces.org/blog/dont-spring-into-garden-cleanup-too-soon
