It's almost magical to think that just a week ago, ~80 people were here for camp and ~300 people came for the powwow. Every little moment was filled with culture, laughter, learning, companionship, pride, skill sharing and acquisition, caring, dedication, and love. To watch these children learn and grow is a privilege that borders on miraculous.

Thank you to the children for your respect.
Thank you to the parents, families, and guardians for trusting us.
Thank you to the fruitful partnerships that result in something truly meaningful.
Thank you to the instructors who so eagerly share their important skills.
Thank you to the staff members working behind the scenes to keep things smooth.
Thank you to ESU2 for managing this project so beautifully.
Thank you to the Neihardt Foundation Board of Directors for not hesitating to say YES.
Thank you to the Omaha and Winnebago communities for showing out for the powwow.
Thank you to the Bancroft community that has never once complained, "What's all that noise?"

Thank you's by name:
Chris Stogdill and Ronda Ras, ESU2. They make everything work.
Sam Kluver, camp director. She makes camp work.
Chef Anthony Warrior. He makes lunch work.
Oonipa Productions. They make the powwow work.
Will Maxwell. He makes camp run.
Rod Peters. He makes everything behind the scenes run.

"Because he rescued the hero tales of our region from obscurity, because he retold them with charm and beauty to a great audience, the Friends of the Middle Border are pleased and honored to make him a Life Member of our Society.
'Whoever learns the book by heart
Or through the story-teller's art
Becomes acquainted --
His life by sad defeat, although
The King of Heaven be his foe,
Is never tainted.'"

Signed by (presumably) all members of the Friends of the Middle Border, Museum of Pioneer Life, in Mitchell, SD. Undated.

Coralie Hughes (John's granddaughter and Hilda's daughter) donated many of the awards and recognitions that John received during his lifetime. As we sort and polish them, we'll share some of the more interesting ones.

The kids have spoken and decided that we need a polar bear at the Neihardt center.

Maybe a grizzly to commemorate the “Song of Hugh Glass”?
