The first moments after birth shape a lifetime of health. A baby’s chance to survive and thrive depends on the care provided at birth and immediately afterward. Jhpiego strengthens systems so mothers and newborns have access to safe deliveries, immediate attention, and follow-up care. Strong starts lead to stronger futures.

Although there is currently no approved vaccine for Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus, effective outbreak response can still save lives and limit transmission.

Effective response measures include operationalizing public health emergency management systems, establishing incident management systems, and strengthening public health emergency operations centers.

Jhpiego has supported public health emergency preparedness and response effort in countries including Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, helping to train rapid response teams, improve surveillance and logistics systems, and enhance risk communication and community engagement. These actions have been important in response to Ebola, Marburg, Mpox, and other outbreaks, and continue to be just as important now to help support the current public health emergency in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We start with women's health, but we don't stop there.

The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization. Jhpiego is working closely with government partners in both countries to support their coordinated response efforts.

At the time of this post, the the World Health Organization has reported nearly 600 suspected infections and more than 130 deaths. In moments like this, we again witness the courage and dedication of frontline health workers, national health authorities, and communities who are at the center of the response, often under incredibly difficult conditions. Their work—from strengthening surveillance and tracing contacts to caring for the sick—is what saves lives. We remain committed to supporting them and protecting lives through rapid, coordinated response during this public health emergency.

AI in health care must start with the realities of frontline care.

Yesterday at , Jhpiego, Viamo, and partners from the ministries of health of Mozambique and Zambia, discussed how AI can better support primary health care systems and frontline health workers.

The conversation focused on practical implementation, from improving referrals and telemedicine to strengthening data systems and governance, while avoiding solutions designed only for highly digitized settings.

Key themes included supporting community health workers with practical decision-making tools, improving referrals, telemedicine, and data analysis, moving beyond pilots toward scalable, sustainable implementation, and building strong governance and policy frameworks for responsible AI use.

Skilled nurses and midwives are the backbone of maternal and newborn survival. We're celebrating the voices of two leaders proving exactly that.

Jesca Chepkirui, a midwife in Kenya, and Beatrice Zulu, a District Nursing Officer in Zambia, both members of the WomenLift Health 2026 Leadership Journey, are at the forefront of advancing maternal health outcomes through advanced clinical training, frontline leadership, and community advocacy.

When nurses have the skills, support, and authority to act, mothers and babies live. Read more: https://bit.ly/3R3JFOb
