Please join the La Luisiana Chapter of the Granaderos y Damas de Galvez, The Isleno Heritage and Cultural Society, Sociedad Espanola, The Louisiana National Guard Museum, The Louisiana State Museum Friends of the Cabildo in New Orleans and Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge in hosting the 2022 March of Galvez. All the events listed are leading up to September 21, the date in 1779 when Galvez and his Louisiana troops defeated the British during the American Revolution. All events are open to the public except where noted.

Bill Hyland, St Bernard Historian and Director of the Isleno Museum will present on Pierre Denis de La Ronde, highlighting his service in the Galvez Expedition. La Ronde was the second commandant of the Poblacion de San Bernardo; served as a member of the Cabildo and later had a role in the Battle of New Orleans. His sister, Louise "Louison" Denis de La Ronde married Andres Almonester and their daughter, Micaela, married Celestin de Pontalba, the son of Pierre and Louison's first cousin, Joseph Xavier Delfau de Pontalba. Denis de La Ronde's half brother was Ignace Francois Martin Delino de Chalmette. Afterwards, we will show the 12 minute film short which Bill Hyland wrote and researched and which received a Golden Telly Award. A reception will follow.

"Bernardo de Galvez and the Battle of Baton Rouge - September 21, 1779" - Presentation by Robert Freeland, Governor of La Luisiana Chapter of the Granaderos y Damas de Galvez and discussion of the First Fixed Regiment of Louisiana. The support Spanish Louisiana provided the United States during the American Revolution is not well known. The mission of the Granaderos y Damas de Galvez, founded in 1975 in San Antonio, Texas, is to educate the public in Louisiana on their role in our Independence. Galvez and his Louisiana troops eventually expelled the British from the Mississippi Valley and Gulf of Mexico. The Battle of Baton Rouge was the first of his victories. After the presentation attendees are invited to visit the museum.

DISCOVERY DAY FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES: Discovery Day offers interdisciplinary fun for all ages with activities, lectures, and all day historical costumed meet and greets! Capitol Park Museum in collaboration with Friends of the Cabildo and the Spanish Heritage Program will have stations throughout the museum for young visitors to learn about Bernardo de Galvez and Spanish history in Louisiana, talk to historical interpreters, and even see some pirates. Visitors can also see Capitol Park Museum's three exhibitions: Me Got Fiyo: The Professor Longhair Centennial, Grounds for Greatness: Louisiana and the Nation, and Experiencing Louisiana: Discovering the Soul of America.
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month and International Talk Like a Pirate day, dress like a pirate and you will learn about the Spanish privateer Renato Beluche. Complete the treasure hunt in the museum to claim your prize!

LAGNIAPPE LUNCH: The September event is "Why Louisiana Should Commemorate September 21st". Granaderos y Damas de Galvez Governor Robert Freeland will lead a discussion on national and international efforts underway to educate the public on the support provided by Spanish Louisiana to the American Revolution. A background presentation on the 1779 Battle of Baton Rouge will be followed by descriptions of what other organizations and cities are doing to promote the story of Bernardo de Galvez. All these efforts are leading up to the 2026 celebrations of the 250 Years of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

In addition to the public events, “invitation only” events will be held at:
1) Thursday September 15 all day: The Cabildo: students learning about Louisiana's Spanish Heritage.
2) Friday, September 16, 3:00PM: Tulane Library Louisiana Research Collection for students and faculty to learn how to use the Tulane Archives to further their studies on the Spanish Colonial period in Louisiana.
3) Tuesday September 20 3:00PM: LSU Libraries Special Collections for students and faculty to learn how to use the LSU Archives to further their studies on the Spanish Colonial period in Louisiana.
4) Thursday September 22 7:25AM: Ascension Episcopal 7th Graders in Lafayette, LA.
