🇺🇸 TODAY IN AMERICAN LEGION HISTORY 🇺🇸

⚖️ October 16, 1989 — 37 Years Ago Today

Did you know The American Legion helped fight for something many veterans rely on today — the right to challenge VA benefits decisions in an independent court?

On this day in 1989, the U.S. Court of Veterans Appeals became operational, marking a major victory in The American Legion’s longstanding efforts to strengthen veterans’ rights.

Before this historic change, veterans had no independent judicial review of VA benefits decisions.

This milestone helped give veterans something incredibly important: a stronger voice and a path to justice when they disagree with a VA decision.

For more than a century, The American Legion has been about more than meetings, uniforms, and membership cards. It’s about standing up for those who served and ensuring the promises made to our veterans are kept.

💪 Veterans fought for our country. The American Legion continues to fight for our veterans.

Did you know The American Legion played a role in making this possible?

⚾🇺🇸 100 YEARS OF AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL! 🇺🇸⚾

On October 15, 1926, history was made when Yonkers, New York, Post 321 defeated Pocatello, Idaho, 23–6 in the first American Legion Baseball World Series!

🏆 Final Score: Yonkers 23 – Pocatello 6

100 years later, American Legion Baseball continues to be about more than wins and losses. It’s about teamwork, sportsmanship, mentorship, and bringing communities together.

For a century, The American Legion has helped young athletes develop skills both on and off the field, while veterans continue to make a difference in the lives of the next generation.

⚾ Here’s to 100 years of baseball, community, and building future leaders!

🎲 The (Not So) Hostile Nerd Takeover of the American Legion has begun! 🇺🇸

We’re changing the narrative from “a bunch of old guys telling war stories” to “a bunch of veterans playing war games!” And yes, those old guys are invited to play too! 😂

The American Legion Department of Maryland’s Gaming & Wellness Committee now has THREE confirmed Gaming & Wellness Bunkers!

🎲 Bunker 29 - Denton - 17 Oct 3-6PM
🎲 Bunker 60 - Laurel - 18 Oct 2-6PM
🎲 Bunker 175 - Severna Park - 25 Oct 2-6PM

With more Bunkers on the way!

🏍️ Just like American Legion Riders have Chapters, our gamers have Bunkers.

And here’s why we call them Bunkers:

If you’ve served in the military, you know a bunker’s purpose: to provide shelter and protection from danger.

Our Gaming & Wellness Bunkers serve a similar purpose, just in a different way. Through gaming, friendship, support, and access to resources, we’re creating places where veterans and their families can connect, find community, and look out for one another.

A Bunker doesn’t have to be a physical building. It’s a group of people who have each other’s backs.

Whether you’re 25 or 85, whether you play dominoes, board games, card games, tabletop war games, or video games, there’s a seat at our table.

📍 Check the comments for October gaming events happening across Maryland!
