A breast cancer journey is never just a diagnosis. It can change the way you see your health, your relationships, your strength, and the support you need along the way. 💗

On October 24, Mikey’s Miracle Foundation invites you to Beyond the Pink: Stories of Strength, Hope & Healing, an afternoon bringing together medical insight, lived experiences, survivorship, advocacy, and community connection.

You’ll hear from voices who bring different perspectives to the conversation, from breast health and patient care to surviving cancer, finding support, navigating complex systems, and using personal experiences to help others.

Breast health starts with knowing what questions to ask. 💗

Knowing your family history, understanding your screening schedule, paying attention to new breast changes, asking about breast density, and following up when additional testing is recommended can help you have better conversations with your healthcare provider.

Family history and dense breast tissue can affect breast cancer risk, and dense tissue can also make some cancers harder to see on a mammogram. Breast cancer screening can help find cancer before symptoms appear, so knowing your personal risk and screening plan matters.

Knowing the signs can start with knowing what is normal for your body. 💗

Breast cancer can show up in different ways. According to the CDC, possible warning signs can include a new lump in the breast or underarm, thickening or swelling, changes in the size or shape of the breast, skin dimpling or irritation, ni**le changes or discharge, and pain in the breast. Some people may have no noticeable symptoms at all.

Many breast changes are caused by conditions other than cancer, but a new or unexplained change is worth discussing with a healthcare provider. The American Cancer Society also notes that most breast lumps are not cancer and that breast pain is not usually a sign of breast cancer, though new or persistent changes should still be checked.

Throughout Pink October, Mikey’s Miracle Foundation will continue sharing awareness stories, education, resources, and reminders to keep the conversation going.

Pink October is here. 💗

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mikey’s Miracle Foundation wants to hear the stories of the people behind the pink ribbon.

We invite you to share the story of a family member, friend, colleague, caregiver, advocate, or someone in your community who is navigating breast cancer or living as a survivor. There are so many stories of courage, strength, hope, healing, and care within our communities, and this October, we want to help recognize them.

NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN! Nominate a breast cancer survivor, fighter, caregiver, or advocate whose story deserves to be recognized and shared. Selected stories will be featured throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honored during Beyond the Pink: Stories of Strength, Hope & Healing on October 24th.

There is strength in turning your own journey into support for someone else. 💗

Joining us for Beyond the Pink: Stories of Strength, Hope & Healing is special guest Brenda McQuay, a breast cancer survivor and social work professional whose personal journey and career have been rooted in helping others.

In 2016, Ms. Brenda discovered a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. With the unwavering support of her son and “rock,” Matthew, she successfully completed treatment and turned that experience into a deeper commitment to service and advocacy.

A Morgan State University School of Social Work alumna, Ms. Brenda has spent her career supporting families and individuals in need of guidance and resources. Now retired, she continues helping cancer survivors and their loved ones navigate complex systems and connect with meaningful support.

This October, we look forward to welcoming Ms. Brenda to Beyond the Pink and hearing the perspective and strength she brings through both her professional experience and personal journey.

There is power in hearing from someone who has lived the journey. 💗

As we prepare for Beyond the Pink: Stories of Strength, Hope & Healing, we’re honored to introduce special guest Desi Waters, a three-time cancer survivor, cancer advocate, podcast host, and collaborative author.

Desi has transformed her personal experiences with cancer into a mission to educate, encourage, and support patients, survivors, caregivers, and loved ones navigating their own journeys. Born and raised in Baltimore, she brings the strength of lived experience to her advocacy and storytelling.

Through her podcast, Cancer Unmasked 360, Desi creates space for candid conversations with patients, survivors, caregivers, medical professionals, support organizations, and advocates. She is also a collaborative author of When Cancer Knocks At Your Door.

This October, we look forward to welcoming Desi to Beyond the Pink and hearing the perspective, encouragement, and lessons she has gained through her journey.

Meet our featured speaker for Beyond the Pink. 💗

This October, we’re bringing medical expertise and lived experiences together for Beyond the Pink: Stories of Strength, Hope & Healing, and we are honored to welcome Dawn Johnson Leonard, MD, FACS.

Dr. Leonard is a board-certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist, certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Throughout her career, she has served in leadership roles in breast care and breast surgery, focusing on breast health education, patient care, program development, and expanding access to quality services. After serving as Chief of Breast Surgery at ChristianaCare, Dr. Leonard returned home to Montgomery County, Maryland, to create a new breast care program for Holy Cross Health at the Holy Cross Health Cancer Center.

At Beyond the Pink, Dr. Leonard will bring trusted medical insight to our conversation around breast health, screening, care, and survivorship.
