The Akoben Foundation

The Akoben Foundation Our mission is to ensure that all early learners are fully equipped with the literacy skills necessary to read at or above grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

The AKOBEN Foundation, Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that develops urban youth into leaders in order to preserve future outcomes of minority communities. Since its inception in 2011, The AKOBEN Foundation has served over 1,000 children, families and homeless citizens in the city of Baltimore. The organization’s work includes its inaugural initiatives “Project Empowerment” – a

youth leadership program in partnership with West Baltimore’s Green Street Academy – and its Back to School Rally at West Baltimore’s Edmondson High School. After assessing what AKOBEN believes to be the root cause of poverty in Baltimore City, AKOBEN has re-focused its mission to eliminating illiteracy during early childhood and developing fundamental communications skills in the city’s youth. AKOBEN’s work has been highlighted in various television and print media that includes Baltimore’s ABC News affiliate, WMAR-TV; Baltimore’s Fox News affiliate, WBFF-TV and the Baltimore City Paper. In 2012, The AKOBEN Foundation, Inc. was awarded the Dr. Louise-Jones Johnson achievement award for community service and advocacy.

This was a busy, super productive week at school for our scholars. From crazy hair day to pajama day, so much school spirit was exhibited! Our scholars still managed to practice Dolch words AND try out for our upcoming talent show! Our scholars ROCK!! Thanks especially to Ariel Coleman, Symone Carolina and Sabrina Foster for being the best staff and helping me make literacy not just necessary, but super cool and fun!!

Oh the joys of reading!! Reading opens one’s mind to endless possibilities! These young scholars started off the year with some hesitation about their reading abilities. Some were nervous about reading out loud our daily affirmations, but no longer do they hesitate. Our kindergarten scholar knows and believes the words of our poem, as do her classmates!
