"It requires not just reading between the lines, but hallucinating new text that simply is not there." This is the comment of U.S. District Judge Jamal Whitehead in response to a Dept of Justice argument that a previous court order meant the government only had to accept about 160 refugees rather than the 12,000 conditionally approved at the time of the Administration's Executive Order suspending refugee resettlement on January 20. At some point soon, the courts will prevail!

The Refugee Admission Program has been in place since the passage of the Refugee Act in 1980.

In 2 years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a U.S. program has resettled 187,000 Ukrainians with little controversy. The U.S. can make humanitarian immigration smooth and efficient if it so chooses. ERICA works to smooth the transition for ALL newcomers in the Baltimore area: Ukrainians, Afghans, Venezuelans, and others from a total of 19 countries last year. As of the end of March, more than 187,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the U.S. under the Uniting for Ukraine program, resettling with resounding efficiency and relatively little controversy.

Still unofficial, still a stopgap, but it had to be. Please ensure any and all Afghan friends and acquaintances have received legal services in order to apply for asylum, TPS, and now, if needed, this extension.

The move will serve as a reprieve to tens of thousands of Afghans who were bracing for the prospect of losing their ability to work and live in the U.S. legally this summer.

Baltimore City Community College English Language Services program's Integrated English Language & Civics Education / Certified Nursing Assistant (IELCE/IET CNA) course provides students with the knowledge and skills required of CNAs, while offering ESL. The course is free for participants, and all materials are provided.

We LOVE this program -- excellent caring service in a calm environment. ERICA referred the asylum seeking family mentioned in the article to the Social Worker in the Library at the library closest to their home. Language line available, supporters and immigrant advocates are welcome to accompany those seeking assistance. Apart from the efficiency, accessing services through a local library helps recipients feel more in control and can connect them to additional nearby community support. We encourage our community partners and their program members to utilize this service to its fullest!

Enoch Pratt’s social worker program, started in 2017, is making a huge impact on people’s lives, those involved say. A professional social worker oversees a staff of five social work student interns from local colleges and universities.
