Meet Tess Russell, a volunteer attorney at Maryland Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts! Tess' journey back to her hometown in her 30s brought her new opportunities to connect with community and MDVLA is a part of that story.

MDVLA is committed to relational alignment – fostering agency and empowerment for the diverse stakeholders we serve throughout the state of Maryland. We practice authentic relationships through a commitment to transparent communication, respect, empathy, and mutual exchange.

Through these relationships, we've committed to the growth of our clients, Maryland’s creative community, pro bono volunteers, and staff.

This work would not be possible without volunteers like Tess! By providing volunteer legal services, you help to build a foundation for Maryland's cultural economy to thrive.

Through education and expert guidance, our volunteers contribute to a Maryland where artists and creatives know their rights, protect their work, build sustainable practices, and shape their communities.

Artists give a lot. They are part of the economy and the culture, but often lack resources and support to build a business and advocate for themselves legally.

At MDVLA, we’re changing that.

Our programs are designed to give creatives back time to focus on their practice, their passions and get back to doing what they do best–create.

🖌️ If you're an artist, join us for an upcoming program! 👩‍⚖️ If you're an attorney, join a 40-year legacy of supporting creatives in our region! Reach out to learn more about what you can gain from volunteering at MDVLA.

MDVLA’s volunteer attorneys and creative entrepreneurs make us who we are!

🚀 Meet Thomas Mooring, an Anne Arundel native who practices his creativity through printmaking, dance, culinary arts, painting and now, interior design. Here's how working with MDVLA supported his expansion into new horizons:

"The attorney I was paired with took great care of me while reinforcing my autonomy in the process. Every nuanced detail around creating a contract for interior decoration work created points of research for the both of us, and having an attorney that knew the right steps to assume responsibility of and when to pass decisions onto me eased my anxiety and offered a healthy space of challenge.”
