Friends of Masonville Cove Urban Wildlife Refuge and Nature Center, providing Environmental Education, nature walks, birding, and other outdoor nature experiences for visitors.

The Friends of Masonville Cove is a volunteer corps dedicated to environmental stewardship and connecting local citizens with their natural spaces. Opportunities include hands-on outdoor work such as debris cleanups or gardening, leading educational programs, and greeting visitors in the LEED certified Environmental Education Center! The group is being formally re-launched, with the first training

sessions to take place this summer! If you are at all interested in volunteer activities at Masonville Cove and Farring-Baybrook Park, please attend one of our upcoming informational meetings to see if this long-term opportunity is right for you!

It's World Water Week, and we are inviting you to join the conversation virtually and learn more about one of our planet's most important resources: water! There's a lot more to protecting water than keeping trash out of the harbor—although you know that's one of Captain Trash Wheel's specialties! This year's discussions explore some big questions about how we use, protect, and conserve water around the world.

🌎 Water & Climate: Learn how protecting water resources can help communities become more resilient to climate change.

🚰 Clean Water & Sanitation: Discover why safe drinking water and keeping human waste out of rivers, lakes, oceans, and groundwater are essential for healthy communities and ecosystems.

🤖 Technology's Water Footprint: Even technologies we don't normally think of as water users—including artificial intelligence—can require significant amounts of water. Experts are exploring how we can make emerging technologies more water-efficient.

🏞️ Restoring Rivers: Learn how communities are working to restore polluted waterways so fish, wildlife, and people can thrive.

🌿 Protecting Wetlands: Marshes, swamps, and bogs act like nature's water filters, helping clean water, reduce flooding, store carbon, and provide habitat for wildlife.

🌐 Water Policy: Governments and leaders around the world are discussing policies that can encourage more responsible water use and protect this precious resource.

Water connects all of us—from the smallest stream to the Chesapeake Bay and the world's great oceans. What happens to water somewhere else can ultimately affect all of us. 🔬Ahoy, citizen scientists!

Join us for Water Quality & Climate Change Science at Masonville Cove and become a water scientist for the day! Working alongside our environmental educators, you'll collect real water quality data, explore how climate change is affecting the Chesapeake Bay, and discover how scientists monitor the health of our local waterways.

Together, we'll investigate questions like:
💧 How is climate change changing our waters?
🌡️ Why are water temperatures important?
🐟 What do these changes mean for fish, birds, and other wildlife?
🌎 What can we do to help protect our harbor?

This is more than a science lesson—it's an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing study of one of Maryland's most important ecosystems. Whether you're a budding scientist or simply curious about the world around you, you'll leave with a better understanding of how healthy waterways support healthy wildlife—and how each of us can be part of the solution.

🌼 This August Eco-Challenge is all about greener, leaner gardening!

Choosing hardy, native plants like the Black-eyed Susan is a great way to add color to your garden while supporting local ecosystems. They attract loads of pollinators and don’t require lots of water to thrive.

Another green gardening tip is to replace store-bought consumables with items you grow instead. Herbs like rosemary, sage, and mint can be drought-tolerant once established, and are great for seasoning food or offering a fragrant alternative to factory-made air fresheners. Pot Marigolds are also easy to grow and bloom throughout much of the summer. They’re great in teas, salves, and skin-care products while also attracting pollinators.

By choosing native flowers and useful herbs, you're creating habitat for wildlife while reducing packaging, transportation emissions, and unnecessary consumption.

🎒 School starts again next week for many families, so here’s some tips to reduce waste during your back-to-school shopping!

📋 Shop Your Home First. Before buying anything new, look through last year's supplies. Pens, binders, folders, calculators, backpacks, lunch boxes, and water bottles often have plenty of life left.

✏️ Repair Instead of Replace. Sew a loose backpack strap, replace a zipper pull, sharpen colored pencils, or clean a lunch box instead of buying a new one. Less for the landfill, more in your wallet.

🥪 Pack a Waste-Free Lunch. Use reusable lunch containers, cloth napkins, refillable water bottles and reusable utensils.

👕 Donate or Swap. If your child has outgrown clothes or school supplies that are still in good condition, donate them or organize a swap with friends, neighbors, or your school community.

🚌 Walk, Bike, or Ride the Bus. Choosing transportation that reduces traffic and emissions can also help students stay active.

Here’s an August Eco-Challenge that will really get you moving! 🚶Lower your carbon footprint while enjoying the best of late summer by leaving the car behind for at least one trip each week.

Walking instead of driving reduces emissions, improves air quality, and gives you a chance to slow down and notice the world around you while getting some great exercise. You might spot butterflies visiting wildflowers, hear birds singing overhead, or meet new friends along the way!

Every mile you don’t drive is one small step toward cleaner air and a healthier planet. Where will your feet take you this week?

🐟 Ahoy, young explorers! Ready to dive into the amazing world beneath the Chesapeake Bay's surface?

Join us for another Nature for Kids adventure at Masonville Cove! This time, we'll discover the fascinating fish that call our local waters home. From rockfish and white perch to channel catfish and more, you'll learn about the incredible underwater neighbors I get to spend my days with.

Then it's time to get creative! We'll combine hands-on learning with an arts-and-crafts activity where kids can make their own fish-inspired masterpiece to take home. Along the way, you'll also discover simple ways to help protect the Chesapeake Bay and keep our waterways clean and healthy for all the fish, turtles, birds, and other wildlife that depend on them. After all, every great environmental steward starts with curiosity—and learning is even more fun when you can get a little glitter and glue on your hands!

Join us for a Community Shoreline Clean-Up at Masonville Cove this Saturday and help keep our harbor cleaner, healthier, and happier for all of our Cove residents and fishy friends. Every bottle, wrapper, and piece of litter we remove helps protect wildlife and keeps trash from making its way into the Chesapeake Bay. Whether you're a seasoned volunteer or joining us for the first time, your helping hands make a real difference—and you'll make Captain proud!

🗑️ Registration is required, so be sure to sign up before the event. Together, we can make waves for a cleaner harbor!
