Friends of Masonville Cove Urban Wildlife Refuge and Nature Center, providing Environmental Education, nature walks, birding, and other outdoor nature experiences for visitors.

The Friends of Masonville Cove is a volunteer corps dedicated to environmental stewardship and connecting local citizens with their natural spaces. Opportunities include hands-on outdoor work such as debris cleanups or gardening, leading educational programs, and greeting visitors in the LEED certified Environmental Education Center! The group is being formally re-launched, with the first training sessions to take place this summer! If you are at all interested in volunteer activities at Masonville Cove and Farring-Baybrook Park, please attend one of our upcoming informational meetings to see if this long-term opportunity is right for you!

Come join the Captain’s Crew this Saturday afternoon at Masonville Cove for a one-hour Community Shoreline Cleanup. We have a lot of fun as we swab the shoreline, and every piece of litter we pull helps Captain Trash Wheel with a busy workload during the rainy fall weather. It’s also a great chance for students to earn service-learning hours while helping keep man-made litter out of the homes of fellow Cove residents. Just one hour, a little teamwork, and a cleaner shoreline. Who’s aboard?

There’s so much to see in October, you wouldn’t want to miss it, would you? It premiers the peak of fall foliage in Maryland, spectacular shows from a wide range of migrating flocks, and celestial opportunities you don’t get during any other month of the year.

So this month, your Eco Challenge is simple, but important: be a daily observer of nature. Look up at the night sky and see what lessons the planets and moon have to offer. Notice the direction the changing colors of the leaves take as they spread through the trees… Listen to the sounds that different species of migrating birds make as they head south.

October gives us plenty of reasons to slow down and look a little closer. Not just for the sheer majestic beauty of it all–but also in the name of science. And we will have a few tips along the way!
