The Baltimore Black Sox Sculpture Project is creating a memorial at Westport Waterfront Park for the Black Sox, who played home games at Westport Park from 1917 to 1920. About 10 life-size statues of Black Sox players will be erected in the 11-acre waterfront park being built in the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, with the first three set to be completed by the end of 2028. The team competed in the Negro Leagues from 1913 to 1934, won the American Negro League in 1929, and had seven National Baseball Hall of Famers.

Couldn’t be happier for Coach Phil Kraska and the Mount Saint Joseph baseball program.

Years ago, when BUBA was searching for a home, Phil Kraska and Athletic Director Kraig Loovis stepped up when we needed it most. I’ll never forget sitting down with them and explaining our situation. Before I could even finish, the response was essentially:

“We’re Mount Saint Joseph. We’ve been serving Baltimore for more than 150 years. We have a home for you.”

And they meant it.

They opened their hitting facility to us and welcomed us into their community. At a time when BUBA was still finding its footing, they chose to believe in Baltimore’s young people when they didn’t have to. That support helped make BUBA what it is today.

That’s why Coach Kraska’s recognition as MIAA Coach of the Year feels especially meaningful. Anyone who knows Phil understands that he’s much more than an outstanding baseball coach. He’s a first-class person who understands that sports are ultimately about serving others, developing young people, and strengthening communities.

What BUBA has become is the result of people and institutions that invested in kids, neighborhoods, and opportunities before there was any guarantee of success. Mount Saint Joseph and Coach Kraska are among those people.

Congratulations on an incredible season and a well-deserved honor, Coach.

Thank you, Coach Kraska, Mount Saint Joseph, and everyone who continues to believe in Baltimore’s young people.

Congratulations to Phil Kraska '04 on being named the MIAA Baseball Coach of the Year! He led the Gaels to an MIAA-best 23 wins, securing the MIAA regular season title. The team then advanced through the playoffs and reached the MIAA Championship.

Congratulations to Coach Liam Bowen on being named the new head baseball coach at Towson University.
8 years ago, when Coach Matt Tyner began his tenure at Towson, the Tigers became BUBA’s first university baseball partner. Coach Tyner set the standard for what a college coach can mean to a community, and we are incredibly grateful for his friendship, leadership, and unwavering support of our mission over the years. We wish him nothing but success in his next chapter.

While we are sad to see Coach Tyner move on, it would be difficult to imagine a more fitting person to lead Towson Baseball than Coach Bowen. During his time at UMBC, Liam was a tremendous partner to BUBA and consistently looked for ways his program could make a positive impact beyond the baseball field. His commitment to developing young people, serving the community, and doing things the right way was evident in every interaction.

BUBA has been fortunate to work closely with both coaches, and I can say without hesitation that they are men of exceptional character. Towson Baseball is gaining an outstanding leader, mentor, and ambassador for the game.

Congratulations, Coach Bowen. We look forward to continuing our partnership and watching the next chapter of Towson Baseball unfold.

A huge THANK YOU to Indian Creek Baseball and Garrett McCoy for their incredible generosity and hard work in building two brand-new pitching mounds at the BUBA facility!

These mounds will be a valuable resource for our athletes, coaches, and programs for years to come, helping players develop their skills and prepare for success on and off the field.

Projects like this make a lasting impact on our community, and we’re grateful for partners who are willing to invest their time, talent, and effort to create opportunities for young people.

Thank you, Garrett and Indian Creek Baseball, for helping us continue to build something special at BUBA!
