Some stories in youth development are not told enough. They happen quietly in wrestling rooms, classrooms, summer camps, long van rides, and moments where young people decide to come back and give back to the same communities that helped shape them.
This is one of those stories.
Chris Green first came through the Beat the Streets - Baltimore wrestling camps as a high school student. Like many young people in our program, he entered through sport, but what stood out early was his consistency, humility, and willingness to lead. Over time, wrestling became more than competition. It became a pathway for service, mentorship, and growth.
As he continued his education at Morgan State University, Chris stayed connected to Beat the Streets Baltimore and began working with us through contracts, coaching assignments, and eventually as an Up2Us Sports AmeriCorps member. Throughout those years, he became a familiar and respected presence in our programs.
Chris served as a wrestling coach and mentor at schools including Baltimore Collegiate School For Boys, Banneker Blake Academy, and Hazelwood Elementary Middle School. He worked with youth both on and off the mat, helping students build discipline, confidence, accountability, and structure. He understood the importance of relationships and showed young people what leadership looks like through action.
As his role expanded, Chris eventually served as a program coordinator for our summer camps, helping oversee operations, support staff, and strengthen the overall student experience. Whether helping organize activities, guiding younger coaches, or supporting campers directly, he consistently brought professionalism and care to the work.
Most recently, Chris applied his academic expertise in psychometrics to evaluate our camp programming. His work helped identify areas for improvement, strengthen program evaluation practices, and provide insight into how we can better serve youth moving forward. That level of contribution represents a full-circle moment — a former participant returning not only as a mentor, but as a researcher helping improve systems that impact future generations.
Today, we proudly congratulate Chris Green on graduating in 2026 from Morgan State University with a Master’s degree in Psychometrics.
His thesis, “Hidden in Plain Sight: Intersectionality and Item Bias in Testing,” reflects the type of critical thinking and purpose-driven scholarship that has defined his journey. It speaks to fairness, equity, and the deeper questions surrounding how young people are evaluated and understood within educational systems.
From camper, to coach, to mentor, to coordinator, to researcher — Chris Green represents exactly what community impact is supposed to look like.
Congratulations, Chris. Beat the Streets Baltimore is proud of you, proud of your growth, and proud to have been a small part of your journey.
