HARWOOD COMMUNITY MEETINGS:

The Harwood Community Association meets virtually on the 1st Monday of the month from 6:30 - 8pm: http://bit.ly/hcagooglemeet

We aim to improve the quality of life for every resident of Harwood. This area shares its early history with its neighboring communities, Abell and Better Waverly. Harwood was originally part of the second “Huntingdon” tract, surveyed for John and Ashsah (Ridgely) Carnan in 1757. In the early 1840s, the Philadelphia, Washington, and Baltimore Railroad began to run a single tract east and west through the neighborhood. Although the train had little impact at first, by 1878, traffic on the now double track of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had increased to sixty trains per day. In the 1870s, the Harwood area was known as Oxford, and was a companion to the other nearby small villages of Friendship and Homestead. Major settlement at this time existed east of York Road, where today’s 27th Street was known as Oxford Street, 28th Street as Brady Street, and Mathews Street as Frisby Street. Considerable brick and frame construction had occurred near the intersection of 25th and Barclay streets, and Sumwalt Lane. Harwood played an important role in Baltimore’s baseball history, as teams, leagues and playing sites hop scotched all over the City. The first field, named Oriole Park, was located in the vicinity of today’s 29th Street and Greenmount Avenue. In 1891, this field was abandoned because of its distance from the City. For the next 25 years, Union Park at 25th and Barclay streets was the predominate seat of baseball in Baltimore. In 1901, however, an American League Park was built on the site of the first Oriole Park. Later, in 1914, Terrapin Pak was built north of 29th Street and was bounded by Vineyard Lane, 30th Street, and the backs of the houses built along the west side of Greenmount Avenue. The Orioles of the Federal League played here for a few years until the league was disbanded. In 1916, the site was renamed Oriole Park, and became synonymous with baseball in Baltimore until it inadvertently burned down in 1944. This land stood vacant until the Barclay School was built to the west in 1959.

This Monday, October 5th we will be gathering together for our monthly Harwood Community Association meeting from 6:30-8pm up at the 29th Street Community Center, and we'd love to have you there. Not just because we want to see your beautiful faces, but also because we have not one, but TWO outstanding guests presenting on information you should absolutely know about:

1. The Dept of Transportation has completed their traffic study for the intersection at 27th and Greenmount, which is one of the most dangerous intersections in our neighborhood for car accidents. We had nine accidents there just in the past year (and god knows how many near-misses and narrowly averted ones as well). They'll be joining us to present their findings and to tell us how they hope to address the problem and where they are in the redesign process. This is welcome forward movement on a problem that has been going on for too long.

2. Our new neighbors at H.O.P.E. Baltimore have recently moved to Harwood from their old Loch Raven facility. They're up and running at 2514 Greenmount Ave., behind the gas station on the corner of 25th and Greenmount. This is not another addiction treatment center or a health clinic. It's a peer-led resource center that serves a variety of needs for the population in that area, including serving breakfast and lunch to those in need, hosting AA and NA meetings, and even providing simple but critical things like access to a shower and a washing machine. They've moved right into the thick of things, and their presence is more needed than ever. A few folks from their team will be coming to the meeting to talk about their work and what they hope to bring to the neighborhood.

Our neighborhood faces a variety of challenges, and we need all the friends and partners we can get, as we work to make it livable and safe for all of us. We hope you'll come out and hear about the work that folks are doing to make that happen. If you can't make it in person you can also watch us streaming live on YouTube.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Come down to the Harwood Community Garden from 10am-12pm this Saturday morning June 20 and join the rest of our volunteer team as we plant some new seedlings, tend to our veggies, finish setting up our tomato trellises, and patch some of our worn out raised garden beds.

We'll have activities for people of all levels of experience and interest - whether you're an experienced grower or a curious novice. You can learn how our watering system works, get your hands dirty, pick some beets and squash, and learn more about our unique approach to urban gardening. We'll have tools and gloves, we just need you!

Folks, this coming Monday, May 4, from 6:30-8:00pm we'll be having our monthly Harwood Community Association Meeting. And its SOLAR ENERGY NIGHT!!!

We're doing a special session on home solar installation, with some guests coming in to talk about low-income homeowner opportunities, solar panel subsidy/rebate/credit options are available for installation, installation costs and processes, and some good solar energy news for renters as well. One of our board members had panels installed on his roof last year, so we'll even have him there to share the homeowner perspective as well. Even if you don't live in the Harwood neighborhood, you're welcome to come and attend.

Meeting is at The 29th Street Community Center at 300 E 29th

All are welcome!
