For Parents of High School Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

Many people ask me how I got three children in college without having to pay tuition. Well, it was a learning process. Knowing if the school is a state or private college. Which applications to complete. Writing a well constructed essay. Knowing what specialized at certain schools offer academic scholarships.

For example: my daughter attends a UMD, because she participated in College Bound and was an 'Athlete-Scholar of the Month' she received a $2400 book scholarship, paying $600 each semester for four years.

My youngest son attends Cornell, and is a part of a program for engineering students promoting STEM among African American. This program offers a scholarship and mentoring. As Mechanical Engineering student, he participates on the BAJA Racing Team, which also offers a stipend each semester.


Cousera, a FREE online school offering a wide range of courses, has launched a new class "Applying to US Universities".

Applying to college is not just completing an application and waiting for an answer. Many colleges require essays and specialized recommendations. Others require a combination of online applications through a clearinghouse like CTS.

One way to send some love and support to your child while their away at college, is delivered to your door every week.

Take a few moments to clip some coupons of your child's favorite foods and toiletries and mail them to them at school.

Not only are you showing them you love them, you teaching them valuable life skills about shopping and saving money.

One thing many religious leaders of today have forgotten, many of the prophets on which their faith was based were men of modest means and went about their spiritual work not for the sake of prestige or sound bits.

Abraham, moved to a land cutoff from the comforts and security of his father's wealth. Jesus, the son of a carpenter literally had no place to call home. Muhammad, was an orphan and was left to fend for himself after the death of his uncle. They lived and served among their people and followers. Whatever was happening in the lives of those around them, they witnessed and experienced first hand.

Their success and impact on the community was not reflected in the value of a private jet or the latest Bentley. They did not look for mass appeal or numbers; they simply followed and obeyed the will of God.
