Students for Environmental Action (SEA)

Students for Environmental Action (SEA) We are a student-run environmental group at Johns Hopkins University! SEA is JHU's Students for Environmental Action! Come check us out!

We are a group of students concerned with the present state of the campus, local, and global environment, and looking for ways we can do our part to improve it. We are currently focusing on campus recycling & sustainability, special events, global ecology, and community outreach. Our meetings during spring semester are Monday nights at 6 PM in Mattin 162! Current projects include expanding compost

ing on campus, informational e-brochures and posters on public transportation and local food, and our Community Garden. Freshmen, don't forget to check out who your Eco-Reps are and talk to them about issues or questions! We welcome new members to come to our meetings and are always glad to see new faces!

The Maryland General Assembly passed a bill this session that would effectively kill Maryland's offshore wind projects. Proponents of the bill claim that offshore wind could disrupt operations at Patuxent Naval Station, but officials from that very facility testified that the bill was unnecessary. Governor O'Malley holds the power to veto it, and we need to make sure he hears our voices.

Click here and sign your name to tell the Governor that we need wind power in Maryland now.

Ask Governor O'Malley: VETO the "Anti-Wind Power" Bill In the final days of the 2014 legislative session, the Maryland General Assembly passed a harmful anti-wind power bill -- HB 1168.

Students for Environmental Action has decided to endorse SGA candidates this year. Make sure to vote, so your voices can be heard on campus.

Voting starts at 4pm today at http://vote.jhu.edu/

The Advocacy and Awareness Alliance endorses Janice Bonsu for SGA Executive President, Kyra Toomre for Executive Vice President, Will Szymanski for Executive Treasurer, and Adelaide Morphett for Executive Secretary. We are a coalition of Advocacy and Awareness groups committed to diverse political and social activism on the Johns Hopkins campus. We believe that all students groups deserve equal opportunity of funding, especially in the form of annual budgets, and that the SGA budget and grant appropriations process should be made more transparent. We take these positions because we aim to increase the political activism and civil discourse on campus. After extensive conversations with all SGA Executive Board candidates this week, we have determined that these candidates are most closely aligned with our interests and goals. We hope that this ticket, which we believe is the most qualified to execute the changes which we wish to see on campus, will reach out to Maxwell Dickey for advice and guidance, as his platform deserves special consideration.

Sincerely,
The Advocacy and Awareness Alliance

Feeling crafty? Come to the North end of the Gilman Tunnel at 3 PM on Saturday to help make a giant bottle out of chicken wire and wood! Get Earth Week started with a bang!

See you all at SEA Meeting at 7 in Gilman 218!

Today or tomorrow morning, do this:

Step 1: Call 1-3 of the following people: Shawn Z. Tarrant (410-841-3545), Barbara Robinson (410-841-3520), Frank M. Conaway, Jr (410-841-3189).

Step 2: Read this "Hello, my name is [Your Name] and I’m a resident of District 40, who is calling to let [Name of Delegate] know that I would like [him/her] to vote against Sentate Bill 1029, the Maryland Agricultural Certainty Program, because it will seriously hurt the health of our Bay, the economy of our city, and the livelihoods of its residents. Could you please pass that on to [him/her]? .... Thank you.”

Step 3: Comment on this post to say that you did.

Why? Some state legislators have said that 6 calls to their office about a bill is enough to make them reconsider their decision. Because SB 1029 halts all new regulations on farms in Maryland for the next 10 YEARS. Before you are at least 28, if our legislators realize that Purdue or other CAFO factory farms are significantly polluting the bay they can't do anything about it, except over-regulate other industries.
