Introducing the Maryland Electrical Contractor and Electrical Inspector Association (MDECIA). The Newest Electrical Inspection Section (EIS) Chapter with NFPA

The former Electrical Contractors Association of Baltimore County has officially evolved into a broader, statewide organization: the Maryland Electrical Contractor and Electrical Inspector Association (MDECIA). We are proud to announce that MDECIA is recognized as the newest Electrical Inspection Section (EIS) chapter within the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).Our new organization has officially launched as of January 1, 2026.

❓Who We Are:

MDECIA is designed to bring together:
• Electrical contractors
• Electrical inspectors and plans examiners
• AHJs and code officials
• Utility representatives
• Fire marshals and first responders
• Educators, apprentices, and industry partners

By expanding beyond a single county, MDECIA’s goal is to support consistent, code-compliant, and safe electrical installations across the State of Maryland.

✅ Our Mission:

MDECIA’s mission is to:

• Promote electrical safety through proper application and enforcement of the NEC and related standards.
• Support professional development with high-quality training and continuing education opportunities (CEUs).
• Encourage collaboration between contractors, inspectors, utilities, and first responders to solve real-world field issues.
• Stay ahead of code changes, emerging technologies, and best practices in electrical safety and enforcement.

❓What We Will Offer:

Starting in 2026, MDECIA plans to provide:
• Regular monthly meetings featuring technical presentations, case studies, and open Q&A.
• CEU-bearing training sessions on the NEC, NFPA standards, and related codes.
• Code update seminars following new editions of NFPA 70 (NEC) and other relevant codes.
• Guest speakers from industry, including manufacturers, utilities, safety experts, and code developers.
• Opportunities to network with peers across multiple jurisdictions and sectors.

✅ This will be a great avenue for:

• Contractors to better understand inspection expectations and code enforcement.
• Inspectors to share challenges and align on consistent interpretations.
• First responders and fire officials to coordinate on electrical safety, fire investigations, and emerging technologies (EVs, ESS, solar, etc.).

✅ Get Involved:

We invite:

• Other jurisdictions across Maryland to participate and collaborate.
• Electrical contractors who want to stay ahead of code requirements and avoid costly rework or violations.
• Inspectors and code officials who want to exchange knowledge and support consistent enforcement.
• First responders interested in electrical safety, incident response, and new technology risks.

The presenter will be Matt Suckley from FAE; Eaton - Bussman Series.

💻 Topics of discussion will include:

• NFPA 70E: Electrical Safety in the Workplace focusing on Safe work practices, PPE selection, establishing an electrical safety program, and risk assessment.
• NFPA 70B: Electrical Equipment Maintenance
focusing on Conditioning and maintenance of equipment.
• In essence, NFPA 70 installs it safely, NFPA 70B keeps it safe through maintenance, and NFPA 70E protects people working on it, creating a comprehensive safety system.

November's speakers will be Michael Smith and Max Myers from Phoenix Sales.

They will provide information about the latest and greatest for BRK smoke detectors and new fire alarm products.

Come out and network and to also hear news going on in our industry. Guests are always welcome. We hope to see you there!

Our friends in Harford County are offering a Masters Prep Class. The details are below:

Saturdays, October 11 - November 22
8 AM-1 PM

Prepare for the State of Maryland Master's Electrician Exam or just brush up on the NEC!

This course is a series of seven 5-hour sessions. It is approved for 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in Maryland. (One absence is allowed to still receive CEU credits.)

Instructor: Joe Fellner, an OSHA-certified Master Electrician

HCECA offers continuing education for its members and non-members. All courses are approved for license renewal in Harford, Cecil, and Wicomico counties.

I hope everyone is doing well and has enjoyed their summer!

The kick off to our monthly meetings will be this Thursday, September 4th, at 6:30 PM. Doors will open at 6pm.

We look forward to seeing all of you there as we have news for the start of the new year. We will also have a representative from Milwaukee to go over the latest and greatest.

The guest speaker at our May meeting was Mr. Sam Rokowski, the Eastern Regional Specialist with NFPA. He explained the benefits that NFPA could provide for association.

The guest speaker at our April meeting was Mr. Sean Tyler, and his co-worker, who represent Copperweld, a leading manufacturer of copper aluminum (CCA) building wire. He explained the effects that using (CCA) has on the industry.

This month’s guest speaker will be Chuck Marquette, Executive Director of the Mechanical Licensing Board within the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, Maryland Department of Labor also Mr. Chet Brown, The State of Maryland Electrical Board Chair, and Tashera Savage, The Electrical Board Administrator.

This is a valuable opportunity to meet and engage with Chuck during a Q&A session. Topics of discussion will include:

Maryland Electrical Law

State Electrical Code and its enforcement

Master Electrical License and testing

Adoption of the 2023 NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code)
