Grief does not only impact our emotions—it affects our relationships, physical health, work, school performance, and our ability to function day to day. For many individuals and families, grief and trauma can evolve into anxiety, depression, prolonged grief, or other behavioral health challenges when support is not accessible.

At Roberta’s House, we believe healing requires more than simply acknowledging loss. It requires access to culturally responsive, trauma-informed care that meets people where they are. Through our Behavioral Health Program, children, adults, and families have access to individual, family, couples, and group therapy designed specifically to address grief, trauma, and emotional wellness.

We know grief is a public health issue—and healing is community work. Every person deserves a safe space to process loss, build resilience, and reconnect with hope.

My Hero

My hero was my paternal grandfather. He was, in every sense of the phrase, a rolling stone. There was always something unpredictable about him. I can still remember coming home from school and suddenly seeing him sitting in a lawn chair by the pool, as though he had appeared out of nowhere, prepared for an unannounced visit that might last a weekend, a month, or until he and my mother inevitably “got into it.” Those moments became part of the rhythm of our family story.

What made him important to me was not perfection or stability. It was his fierce independence. He moved through life on his own terms and refused to bend himself to fit other people’s expectations. He modeled self-reliance, personal freedom, and the courage to speak his truth without apology or fear of disapproval. Even when people disagreed with him, there was something deeply authentic about the way he carried himself.

As I grew older, I realized that heroes are not always the polished figures we celebrate publicly. Sometimes they are complicated people who leave lasting impressions because of the lessons they embody. My grandfather taught me that strength can look unconventional. He showed me the value of standing firmly in your convictions, navigating life independently, and remaining true to yourself even when it makes others uncomfortable.

Like many reflections shared through Roberta's House, the people who shape us often influence not only what we believe, but how we move through the world. My grandfather’s influence continues to surface in my own approach to leadership, resilience, and identity. In many ways, a part of his spirit still sits beside me — calm, unapologetic, observant, and entirely his own man.

Though he died when I was an adolescent, and I miss his clarity and good humor, his passion for life inspires me to this day.

Healing does not always look the same for everyone. For some, teletherapy offers accessibility and comfort. For others, in-person care provides a deeper sense of connection and support. At Roberta’s House, we believe the most important thing is finding the level of care that meets you where you are.

Our latest blog explores the benefits, challenges, and human connection behind both teletherapy and in-person behavioral health services — helping individuals and families make informed decisions about their mental health and grief support journey.
