Formed in September 2006, the Chapter of Black & Latino Alumni (CBLA) meets regularly to develop social, educational, and fellowship activities for the more than 7,000 Black and Latino alumni of UMBC. Lea-Pearl Njei, Caly Ferguson, and Jariatu Kargbo have each received the Goldwater Scholarship for 2025 – 2026. “You need people who believe in you. You need mentors, you need support groups, and you can and will find them at UMBC,” Njei says.
