We are incredibly proud of NASW-MD member, Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW on receiving the National Association of Social Workers Knee/Wittman Outstanding Achievement Award.

Nancy Kusmaul is a professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She is a prolific researcher and author, with nearly 70 peer reviewed publications addressing nursing home quality, trauma-informed care, and policy impacts on older adults and their families. She also single authored a groundbreaking policy text, Aging and Social Policy in the United States.

For over 25 years, Kusmaul has been actively involved in service provision, program development, research, and policy advocacy aimed at improving health and well-being for older adults and their family caregivers across the care spectrum. She was a 2019-2020 Health and Aging Policy Fellow, serving in the office of Senator Ron Wyden and with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

At UMBC, she served as president of the Faculty Senate from 2024-2026. In that role she advocated for faculty with university administration and collaborated with other shared governance groups. This role allowed her to use macro social work principles to support change in the university’s organization. She also regularly mentors junior faculty and doctoral students, having served on 10 dissertation committees in the last five years.

In 2024, Kusmaul received the Gerontological Society of America's Elaine M. Brody Thought Leader Award and the Congressional Research Institute for Social Work & Policy (CRISP)’s Outstanding Individual in Academia Award. She served as a reviewer for the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s 2022 Consensus Study Report, The National Imperative to Improve Nursing Home Quality: Honoring Our Commitment to Residents, Families, and Staff.

Kusmaul served on the board of directors of the National Association of Social Workers New York State Chapter and served as the co-chair of the National Association of Social Workers Maryland Committee on Aging from 2021-2024. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. Kusmaul holds a Ph.D. in social welfare from the University at Buffalo, a master’s in social work from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester.

Day 2 Recap ✨

Day 2 was just as exciting as Day 1! It was wonderful connecting with so many familiar faces at the National Conference.

We kicked off the day celebrating Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW, recipient of the Knee/Wittman Outstanding Achievement Award. For more than 25 years, Dr. Kusmaul has dedicated her career to service provision, program development, research, and policy advocacy to improve the health and well-being of older adults and their family caregivers across the continuum of care.

We were also proud to see Maryland represented by Ebony Middleton, LMSW, CSM, PMP, CCMP, Director of Workforce Advancement and Strategies at NASW, who moderated a discussion featuring chief executive officers from the nation’s leading mental health organizations. During the discussion, she highlighted the incredible work of our Executive Director and Maryland Chapter during this year’s legislative session to help safeguard the use of AI in social work practice.

We’re looking forward to all that Day 3 has in store! Be sure to join us at our Maryland Meetup on Friday at 11:15 a.m.at the hotel lobby bar. We hope to see you there! 💙

We could not be more proud of NASW-MD Board Member Dawn Hobdy, MSW, LICSW on her induction as an NASW Pioneer. Dawn has been a visionary leader in the development and advancement of social work ethics, both in the U.S. and internationally. During her 20-year tenure with the NASW Office of Ethics and Professional Review, she served as a senior ethics associate, manager, director, and vice president. She was responsible for the overall vision, mission, structure and policies associated with the newly established nationwide NASW diversity, equity and inclusion program.
Hobdy also organized NASW’s first Social Work Ethics Summit, which resulted in a set of ethical guidelines that have influenced state legislative policies. She also played key roles in updating the NASW Code of Ethics in 2008, 2017 and 2021. These updates included the addition of specific guidance for the use of technology in social work practice, cultural humility and self-care. For each of these revisions, she not only assembled a team of ethics experts from across the country, but also ensured that the new provisions were grounded in current research, new and emerging areas of practice, and the core values of the profession. Her foresight in updating the NASW Code of Ethics is evident in her leadership on the use of technology in social work—standards that were implemented well in advance of those by other professional organizations.

Hobdy also played key roles in modernizing the processes for managing ethics complaints against NASW members. She nationalized the professional review process, created training materials and programs, and addressed issues in existing systems and procedures. Her efforts ensured a more standardized and equitable approach to professional review.
