We will strengthen significantly Maryland’s economy by focusing on the economic growth, the economic inclusion and economic influence of African Americans. Working with others who have a similar interest in Mary

land’s economic future, we will dismantle the institutional barriers and biases that prevent people from realizing their full potential by addressing broken systems, not broken people. Informed by data and leading through innovative and research based approaches, ABC will ensure that economic opportunities are extended to, and seek to advance ALL people.

Community Starts with Conversation.

Associated Black Charities hosted our latest Community Convos in Baltimore’s Penn-North neighborhood at Doxa Ministries Church, joined by Nicole Earle of Dominion Real Estate.

Residents, community leaders, advocates, and partners came together for an open and meaningful conversation about the issues impacting Black communities. The evening created space to share perspectives, exchange resources, build relationships, and discuss opportunities to create meaningful and lasting change.

Thank you to Nicole Earle, Doxa Ministries Church, and everyone who joined us and brought their voices to the conversation.

Community Convos continue to remind us that progress starts when we come together, listen to one another, and turn conversation into action.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Community Convos!

Since becoming President and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee in 2022, Mark Anthony Thomas has helped strengthen the organization’s role in bringing together business, government, philanthropy, and community leaders to advance Baltimore’s economic future.

Under his leadership, GBC has developed the region’s first 10-Year Economic Opportunity Plan, integrated BLocal and UpSurge Baltimore, launched a unified regional brand, and helped secure a federal Tech Hub designation to position Baltimore as a leader in biomanufacturing and emerging technology. He has also helped lead regional efforts focused on housing, transportation, infrastructure, economic investment, and the response following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Before joining GBC, Mark led the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance and held leadership roles with the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles. He holds an MBA from MIT and a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University.

During this Equity First conversation, we’ll explore Mark’s leadership journey, Baltimore’s economic future, and how he has kept "equity" in the forefront of his professional experiences.

Last week, Associated Black Charities had the pleasure of attending the AFRO’s Black Business Matters Expo, a celebration of Black entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic empowerment across our community.

This year’s event was especially meaningful because The AFRO and Associated Black Charities share the same birthday, August 13. We were honored to celebrate alongside The AFRO as they marked an incredible 134 years of informing, uplifting, and advocating for Black communities.

For generations, our organizations have shared a commitment to strengthening Black communities, expanding opportunity, and creating pathways for progress.

The Expo was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that shared legacy while connecting with Black business owners, entrepreneurs, leaders, and community partners who are building what comes next.

Happy 134th birthday to The AFRO, and thank you for continuing to create spaces where Black businesses and Black communities can connect, grow, and thrive.
