CASH Campaign of Maryland's founders, Robin McKinney, MSW '01, and Sara Johnson, MSW '02, were recently featured on a podcast with the University of Maryland School of Social Work to discuss their journey into financial social work, the challenges they have faced throughout their careers, and the story behind building CASH Campaign of Maryland.

Their conversation explores the connection between financial security and social work, the importance of economic mobility, and how the field has evolved to better support individuals and families navigating financial challenges.

"Nearly 80% of Gen Z and Millennials say they are using “survival spending” just to keep up with everyday life." That means relying on credit cards, payment apps, side hustles, or dipping into savings simply to cover basic needs like rent, groceries, transportation, and bills.

This is not about being irresponsible. It reflects the financial reality many younger adults are navigating right now: rising costs, debt, unpredictable income, and economic pressure that makes it harder to get ahead.

One of the biggest financial myths is that better money habits come from having more self-control.
In reality, strong financial habits usually come from creating systems that slow spending down before it happens.

That is where a “Pause Buffer” can help.

A Pause Buffer is a simple habit: Before making a non-essential purchase, give yourself a short waiting period before buying it.

Scammers do not hack your bank account first. They usually try to trick YOU first (That's called social engineering.)

Phishing scams are designed to look legitimate: fake bank texts, “urgent” emails, delivery notifications, account alerts, or messages pretending to be government agencies.

The goal?
To pressure you into clicking a link, sharing passwords, or giving personal information before you have time to think.

🚩 Common phishing red flags:
• “Urgent action required”
• Misspelled website links
• Requests for passwords or banking info
• Messages saying your account is “locked”
• Random payment or package alerts you were not expecting

One important thing to remember:
Real banks and legitimate organizations will NOT ask for sensitive information through text or email.

If something feels rushed, threatening, or too urgent: pause first, think for a moment. Scammers use your emotions to get what they want!

Financial safety is part of financial wellness.

A savings account is great.
But a “Life Happens” fund? That’s survival support.

Because real life is unpredictable.

Flat tires.
School expenses.
Last-minute childcare.
The list goes on...

Financial stability is not about being perfect with money. It is about creating small cushions that help you recover when life happens.

Your goal is not perfection. Your goal is breathing room. Small steps count. Every dollar saved is support for your future self.

A “Life Happens” fund can help reduce stress, avoid overdraft fees, and create more flexibility when unexpected expenses show up.

Financial literacy is not just about saving money. It is about confidence, opportunity, and feeling prepared for real life.

A recent article from the World Economic Forum highlights something important: young people want to talk about money more openly, and they are actively looking for tools that help them build stronger financial futures.

For many young adults, financial stress starts early — navigating student debt, rising costs, inconsistent income, and financial systems they were never taught how to use. That is why accessible financial education matters more than ever.
