Illegal fees. Predatory landlords. Uninhabitable conditions.

Civil Justice’s Economic Justice Program doesn’t just stand with Marylanders facing exploitation—we fight back. We take on illegal fees and debt collection tactics, challenge predatory practices, recover money owed, and correct credit reporting errors.

We hold abusive actors accountable and fight to put hard-earned money back where it belongs: in your pockets. https://www.civiljusticeinc.org/economic-justice-program

Congratulations to Civil Justice's Executive Director, Sarah Coffey Bowes, on being named a 2026 MD500 Nonprofits honoree by The Daily Record!

A career rooted in direct legal services shaped Sarah into one of Maryland’s foremost advocates for civil legal access. As Executive Director of Civil Justice since 2019, she has dramatically increased the organization’s budget and launched the Maryland Justice Passport, a trauma-informed legal navigation platform that received the 2025 American Legal Technology Award for Access to Justice. A Maryland Justice Passport builds powerful connections—linking Marylanders facing legal issues with trusted organizations and resources they might not otherwise reach.

A Justice Passport can be used to track applications for services, store important case documents, and can be easily shared with service providers so that they can quickly see case information and assist you. Learn more or create your own passport for free at https://www.civiljusticeinc.org/maryland-justice-passport.

This project is supported by a grant from Maryland Judiciary's Access to Justice Department.
