TODAY WE CELEBRATE!

53 years ago today — September 26, 1973 — President Richard Nixon signed the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 into law.

Section 504 of that law was the FIRST federal civil rights law to protect people with disabilities from discrimination. It said that any program or activity that receives federal money cannot discriminate against a person because of their disability.

This law sparked a movement. It led to the 504 Sit-In of 1977. It helped build the foundation for the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. And it is the foundation on which People on the Go Maryland stands today.

Thank you to every advocate, past and present, who fought — and continues to fight — for our rights!

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO REGISTER TO VOTE!

The Maryland voter registration deadline for the November 3, 2026 General Election is coming up!

Here is the good news: In Maryland, you can ALSO register in person at early voting centers (October 22–29) or at your polling place on Election Day — but don't wait! The earlier you register, the more time you have to make your voting plan.

SELF-ADVOCACY TIP OF THE WEEK!

Self-advocacy means knowing your rights, knowing what you need, and speaking up for yourself — even when it feels hard.

Here is this week's tip: YOU have the right to ask questions. Whether it is at a doctor's office, a government agency, or in your community — if you do not understand something, you have the right to ask for a plain language explanation!

At People on the Go Maryland, our Project STIR (Steps Toward Independence and
Responsibility) program helps people with disabilities build exactly these kinds of skills — the skills to speak up, advocate, and lead.

Disability History Moment: The Fight for Section 504

In 1973, the U.S. Congress passed the Rehabilitation Act. Section 504 of that law said: no person with a disability can be left out of programs that receive federal money — just because of their disability. This was a HUGE step forward for disability rights.

But the government was slow to enforce it. So in April 1977, disability rights activists across the country staged sit-in protests. In San Francisco, advocates occupied a federal building for 25 DAYS — the longest such occupation in U.S. history at the time — until the government agreed to enforce Section 504.

Those protesters paved the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 — and for the work we do today at People on the Go Maryland!

Their fight became our freedom.

Disability History Moment:

Did you know that in the 1960s, a group of students with significant physical disabilities at the University of California, Berkeley changed history?

Students like Ed Roberts were told they did not belong in college. They refused to accept that. Their persistence led to the founding of the Independent Living Movement — the idea that
people with disabilities have the RIGHT to direct their own lives, make their own decisions, and be part of their communities.

Their courage helped build the entire disability rights movement that we continue today at
People on the Go Maryland.

We stand on the shoulders of giants.
