Founded in 1839 by Theodore James Ryken, with a vision to form a community of laymen who as Religious Brothers would participate in the Church's mission of evangelization through a life of Gospel service lived in solidarity and availability among the people.

Last week, Brother Joseph Kalibbala led his first prayer service with the students of the Ryken Centre for Hope and the Vocational Training Centre in Bungoma, Kenya. Brother Joseph recently began a new role at the Centre. Brother Christopher Mwima, Co-Director of the Centre shared, “It is inspiring to witness how freely he has offered his talents and skills, and the impact this has already had on our community. His zeal and dedication are a true reflection of our charism as Brothers of St. Francis Xavier.”

Recently, two of our third year postulants from Kenya, Willis and Eliud, visited the Brothers and their ministries in Likasi, Congo. At Cisaniko School in Kasenga, Congo they recently furnished the teachers' room with new desks for every teacher. The school was also blessed with the opening of their new computer lab equipped with 20 computers to facilitate student learning.

Recently, Brother Joseph Mlinzi sat down with our third-year postulants to talk about mission. He shared with them his 10 year mission experience in Haiti. He also discussed the importance of remembering that the Brothers are all missionaries wherever they are.

This week is Laudato Si' Week (May 17-24), marking the anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on creation care. In Laudato Si', Pope Francis tells us that "the urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change" (no. 13). Recently, Archbishop Richard Henning met with representatives from the religious congregations who serve the people in the Archdiocese of Boston. Brother Richard Lunny was asked to represent Brother John Hamilton and the Xaverian Brothers. The Archbishop expressed his sincere gratitude for all the ministries provided by religious that enrich the lives of the poor, marginalized and those who are struggling from fear and oppression who need our help more today than ever before.

On Sunday, April 19, twenty Associates and Brothers gathered in the Treyton Oak Towers Chapel for shared reflection on the Sunday Scriptures, focusing on the Journey to Emmaus. Brother Kenney facilitated the experience, inviting a depth of sharing that fostered both spiritual growth and a strengthening of community bonds.

In April, the Kenya Children Assembly of Bungoma County was held at St. Xavier, Bungoma in cooperation with the Ryken Centre for Hope. At the event, the children within the county elected their own representatives in positions such as governor, deputy and speaker. Those who were elected will meet at the national level to elect a president. You might remember Shadrack Wafula (pictured in the third photo). He is the outgoing governor of the program. Shadrack was a resident at the Ryken Centre for Hope and a student at St. Xavier. We are proud of his continued success.

This past year, Brother Kenney Gorman in collaboration with Associate Marty Carraro worked on a special project - Pioneers in Faith: The Cyrenian Collection. As stated by Brother John Hamilton in the preface of the book, "This collection of brief biographies invites the reader to pause and reflect on those early beginnings and to encounter the Brothers whose lives laid the foundations of the Xaverian mission in America." The XBSS and Sisters of Notre Dame deNamur networks hosted a Cross-Congregational Board Forum on March 26–27 in Quincy, MA. The event brought together nearly 90 trustees and ministry leaders from across both networks for a collaborative formation experience focused on strengthening board governance and advancing mission effectiveness. Grounded in the theme “Leading with Purpose, Governing with Vision,” the forum combined keynote presentations, breakout sessions, and shared dialogue to deepen understanding of governance as a form of ministry, emphasizing the board’s role in mission integration, strategic leadership, stewardship, and partnership with school leadership.
