On Oct 14th, over 40 Brothers, Associates, benefactors and friends gathered for the Theodore James Ryken Society Luncheon at the Kings Contrivance Restaurant in Columbia, MD. It was a joyous occasion of reconnecting and hearing about the wonderful things our benefactors enable through their support. Brother John Hamilton shared an update on the congregation, while Dr. Patrick Slattery shared a story exemplifying how Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools are unique and more than just a great education.

Brothers Michael McCarthy, Joseph Britt and William Griffin begin the 23rd year of Xaverian presence in St. Camillus Parish English as a Second Language Program. This year a total of 140 adult students will either begin or continue their studies of English conversation and proficiency, accompanied by 12 volunteer teachers. The program, under Brother Joe’s directorship, offers two 90-minute classes each week for two semesters. The participation of students beyond the parish itself speaks to the popularity of and need for this vital service for our immigrant brothers and sisters.

Recently, Brother Jackson Omwanda Ondiebo took part in leading young people from Karatina University and the Catholic University of East Africa at their spiritual exchange program. At the program, Brother Jackson shared the importance of vocational discernment with the young people from both schools. Later this month, Brother Jackson will receive a diploma in Community Development and Social Sciences.

On Tuesday, September 8, Brothers Mike Foley and Kenney Gorman; accompanied Brother Ward O'Connell to the University of Louisville’s Gold Standard of Optimal Aging Luncheon and Presentation. Brother Ward was among 40 honorees, all age 85 and older, recognized for setting the standard for aging well, maintaining a zest for life, and making meaningful contributions to their communities. Brother Ward continues to exemplify these qualities through his active involvement in Xaverian community life and his generous service to his fellow residents at Treyton Oak Towers. Congratulations, Brother Ward, on this well-deserved recognition; and thank you for continuing to show us what it means to age with joy, purpose, and a spirit of service.

Brother Ward O'Connell will be recognized on September 8 by the University of Louisville's Trager Institute for “embracing both the challenges and blessings of aging … He models resilience, gratitude and joyful purpose, inspiring others to live fully, remain connected and continue growing at every stage of life.”

Forty men and women will be recognized for aging well on Sept. 8 by the University of Louisville’s Trager Institute.

“The Gold Standard of Optimal Aging Award Ceremony celebrates older adults, aged 85 years and over, who lead engaged and flourishing lives and inspire those around them with their zest for life,” according to the institute.

Among this year’s honorees, who were nominated by family, friends, colleagues and businesses, are an Ursuline Sister of Louisville, a Xaverian Brother and a priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville.

On August 7-9, 2026, 41 new teachers and staff members from across the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS) gathered at the Maritime Conference Center in Maryland for the annual XBSS New Teacher and Staff Orientation/Retreat. The three-day experience invited participants not simply to learn about Xaverian history, but to consider what it means to become a “partner in mission” and carry the Xaverian charism into their own classrooms and school communities. A highlight of the weekend was a panel featuring Brother Michael McCarthy, Brother John Hamilton, Brother Bill Griffin, Megan Dean, a teacher and Assistant Principal at Our Lady of Good Counsel, and Mary Abdo, theology teacher and campus minister from Mount St. Joseph. August 16-20, the Kenyan region gathered for a retreat at the Franciscan Sisters in Nairobi. The four-day retreat focused on deepening the union with Christ within the context of community religious life. The retreat ended with the temporary professed Brothers renewing their vows.

MSJ President Mr. Brendan Donohue received a Heavy Hitter Award from the Orioles because of the 700+ members of Gael Nation who cheered the Orioles on to victory during MSJ Night at Camden Yards!
